The Government of Canada will match the contributions of individual Canadians to eligible Canadian charitable organizations in support of humanitarian and recovery efforts in response to the earthquake in Haiti, up to a total of $50 million.

Florida's U.S. Senators are teaming up with their counterparts in New York to introduce legislation which they hope would increase charitable contributions to Haitian disaster relief.
Under current law, a taxpayer can only take a deduction for up to 50 percent of one's income in a certain year; corporations can only donate up to 10 percent of their income. Additionally, special tax rules for food donations which allowed corporations to deduct the actual market value of the food, rather than the cost to produce it expired at the end of last year and have not yet been extended.
Now Florida Senators Bill Nelson and George LeMieux, along with New York Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, would like to temporarily waive those rules to encourage increased donations to Haitian relief efforts. It's been done before.
After Hurricane Katrina, Congress waived both of these rules for donations designated for relief in the Gulf Coast. Today, the senators proposed waiving the limitations for donations designated to Haiti relief in 2010.

NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL and the players' union are contributing $1 million toward relief efforts in Haiti.
The American Red Cross and Partners In Health will receive $500,000 each.
NEW YORK — The NBA and its players' association will contribute $1 million to support the relief efforts in Haiti.
They said Friday they would join with UNICEF and other relief agencies to provide assistance, and Haiti native Samuel Dalembert (FSY) of the Philadelphia 76ers has taped a public service announcement for UNICEF encouraging fans to contribute.
Dalembert will address the crowd before the 76ers' home game Friday and make a $100,000 donation to UNICEF. He will also match the donations made by fans at the game.
Hendrick lends plane for Haiti earthquake relief
CHARLOTTE —Hendrick Motorsports has loaned an airplane and two flight crews to an organization that is participating in the Haitian earthquake relief efforts.
The NASCAR team loaned a 45-passenger plane to Missionary Flights International, which will send support teams in and out of Port-au-Prince. The first flight is scheduled to leave Fort Pierce, Fla., on Saturday morning and will take 30 passengers and medical supplies into Haiti.
The HMS aviation team is planning to fly at least one roundtrip per day, with no timeline set on how long the plane and personnel will be on loan. HMS officials have a second plane on standby, and team owner Rick Hendrick is covering all costs associated with the flights.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Visa said Friday it is donating $200,000 to the American Red Cross for Haitian earthquake relief.
The company said it will also match employee donations to Haitian relief efforts on a two-to-one basis through the end of this month.
Through February, San Francisco-based Visa will donate revenues generated by charitable contributions made through its payment network to aid relief in Haiti. Those donations will be made directly to the American Red Cross.
Visa Inc. will waive interchange fees for transactions through the end of February on donations made to a group of U.S.-based charities that are providing support to Haitian relief efforts. Eligible charities are: American Red Cross; AmeriCares; CARE USA; Direct Relief International; Habitat for Humanity; International Rescue Committee; Mercy Corps; Oxfam America; Save the Children; US Fund for UNICEF; and World Vision.

The list goes on and on and on and on. Please, Sanity, explain how you can put a dollar amount on a catastrophy... per person? How much is too much in your eyes? How much to rebuild hospitals, schools and homes? How much to give people medical care, rebuild sanitary systems?
