as in webcasting.

On first thought cool.... but many do not think it is appropriate to photograph the dead.

Any thoughts on this/

Yeah, thats what I want... folks sitting around in there underwear, watching my funeral and chatting with their friends.

Unless ......say... everyone HERE watched it... and mocked it... I could go for that.

They could make it interactive:

Press one for cremation etc.

The thing I've always hated about funerals is the miming involved. You can get away with miming if there is a big congregation involved but if the dead person was unpopular then you really should attempt to sing just in case all the other three people have the same idea of miming.

Photographing the dead used to be common. I don't see the problem.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-mortem_photography

In fact, if you follow this link, you will see dead that are posed to appear alive and their family members posing with them. Using media (photography, videos, paintings or sculptures) of the dead is hardly new.

I can just see the Yahoo IM transcript......

As long as this is done in a tasteful manner I am all for it. The reasons are a couple of different ones.

First would be if you have a loved one who passes, let's say some live to far away to make the drive and or can't afford to fly, there is no real way for them to be in attendance.

Also, I will use this for an example. My mother's health is in such a condition that travel to anything takes way too much out of her.To have to fly would just be too much on her.

Having funerals set up online in appropriate manners for family and friends with such circumstances is a good idea, so in a way they can still be there.

DesFIP -> RE: Now You Can Attend Funerals Live Over The Internet (1/20/2010 5:49:25 PM)

We have a generation now of very old people, above 85 who are physically unable to travel without assistance. This would allow them to say goodbye to friends without endangering their own health.

Personally I don't think a funeral is about staring at a dead face but of offering sympathy to the mourners.

domiguy -> RE: Now You Can Attend Funerals Live Over The Internet (1/20/2010 5:52:45 PM)

It would be nice to anonymously be able to swear "that I saw him move."

And of course jerk off.

pahunkboy -> RE: Now You Can Attend Funerals Live Over The Internet (1/20/2010 7:33:08 PM)

....some people dont want to be photographed even when alive.  The Amish dont.   I cant say I ever seen family pics of a coffin.

littlewonder -> RE: Now You Can Attend Funerals Live Over The Internet (1/20/2010 7:42:25 PM)

My family has some very old customs and one of them used to be that you would photograph the dead, sometimes even making them seem extremely lifelike in the photos so that their memory would last beyond the generation. It was a very common practice in Victorian Times especially among immigrants coming from the "old country".

I don't really see this as being that far a stretch and I think it's a good idea for family and friends who would like to say their last goodbyes but cannot leave work or cannot travel. I see it a lot in my line of work where we have a lot of elderly who are not able to get around very well and I think this would be extremely useful. It would help people to possibly move on a little better with their lives knowing they were able to see their departed ones one last time.

Amish families probably didn't take the funeral pictures. No one was required. However...

People didn't used to be as pussy about death and dead bodies as we are now. The living room used to known as the parlor. Guess where viewings used to be held?

When the custom changed, they even changed the name as a nice "fuck you" to the dead when it used to be custom to sit up with the deceased through the night.

ray stevens, sittin up with the dead.  terribly silly stuff, but fitting.

i'd like the idea of a funeral showing on the computer, because i cant always travel like i'd like to.  and after the low-clearance flying we did last year to get to TheEngineer's grandmother's bedside to tell her goodbye, i honestly dont want to do that again.

she was 100.  she'd lived a good long life but of course everyone didnt want her to die.  we got there in time for her to actively respond to his voice.  and that was enough for me.

Due to lack of funds I have missed many family funerals (and am likely to miss my parents' funerals when they go as well) and its just part of life. I think a funeral online would be a waste of time & effort. If you can't attend for whatever reason then you can't attend....no big deal.
