Does anyone know how someone interested in lactating would begin the process?

A. Be born female.

B. Get pregnant.

Alcohol and being in the backseat of cars helps achieve B.

There are also inducement drugs if this is too tedious a process. Domperidone, Raglan etc. Or herbs eg fenugreek.

I disclaim any responsibility for side effects suffered by following this advice.

I'm thinking I want to skip B....

if you buy a double breast pump and start using it in five minute increments, increasing the time every few days, your breasts will automatically start producing milk.

It is rather painful and a little tedious, but once the milk comes in, as long as you pump or your body has a 'need' to produce milk, you always will.

My breasts still lactate and the last time my daughter breast-fed was 16yrs ago.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

May i ask how long does this usually take, i know it will be different with different woman, but a general idea.

Being successful in lactating without being pregnant does depend upon many factors, a key one being if the woman ever lactated before (usually from nursing a baby). Re-lactating is much easier than it is to begin for a woman who has never been pregnant and never lactated in her life. Like LadyDeLion, mine never really stopped - so if it was something my Owner wanted it would just be a matter of increasing the production again, much simpler than if i never had before.

There are lots of good websites out there on inducing lactation, just google "inducing lactation," and you'll find a bunch. She doesn't necessarily have to take hormones, but the process does take a lot of time and commitment on both parties as the best method is simply good old fashioned suckling by her partner. A significant portion of lactation is mental, and requires that human contact to get things started. After that a good breast pump and a regular schedule will help keep her production up.
