For as long as I've been aware of the BDSM targeted rope types (cotton, hemp, silk, etc) I've assumed that the reason the people that used them hated nylon was that they'd only used solid core nylon (which is awful, yet strong) or 3 cord twisted nylon (which is slightly better, but falls apart if you don't seal the ends). Being a user of solid braid nylon (mostly sold to equestrians and others that are tying up large mammals) I ignored those trying to get me to spend between 3 and 10 times what I'd been spending on rope, plus shipping.

However, I'm trying to be more open-minded. So, I decided to ask the forum what they think. Has anyone here used solid braid nylon (there's nothing there but the braid, no filler) and switched to an organic rope? If so, why? Was it worth the price increase?

Are you asking about a specific use for the rope?  For example, i use 100% nylon rope to make floggers and cats.  From what research i did originally, that was the preferred material for rope floggers and cats.

there is a flat braid that is really tits. nylon is weak and stretches. if you know why and what rope, burn rate and stretch, and what knots are worth it and not, and you arent doing it professionally..........if it gets you a blowjob, just do it.

Subbie: I'm talking about general bondage, mostly a mixture of chest harnesses, limb restraints, and the like. Shabrai is something I tie on occasion, suspensions aren't really something I get to do as often as I'd like. I agree that nylon is almost always going to be the best for rope floggers, since it can be used to make "fly wisk" style floggers, you can heat seal the ends for a very light cat or you can do a more traditional cat.

Mnottortail: 1/4" full-braid nylon has a hanging weight test of, depending on who tested it, between 175 and 250 pounds. I'm tying up people, not draft horses,so I figure it'll be strong enough. As for stretching, yes any braided rope will have some stretch to it. The rest of your post I'm not sure I understood. I think you said that it doesn't really matter, and that there's a special type of braided rope for brest bondage?

Im shooting myself in the foot by saying this, considering how I run a business that is one of those 'ten times the cost' rope suppliers ..... but .....

For general purpose bondage, nothing at all is wrong with solid braid nylon.

The problem as far as I can see it is that the majority of the bondage teachers in the kink community are all doing japanese style suspension. Even when these instructors teach something else like takedown play or bondage photography, the instruction still has a heavy flavor of japanese suspention to it. Now since solid braid nylon is a poor choice for japanese suspention and bulk-twist hemp is a great choice for japanese suspention, its common for the people in these classes to come away thinking that the rope the instructor used is the proper choice for ALL kinds of bondage work.

So in the end you kind of have a 'groupthink' thing taking place.

First place, ten times the cost, the hungry tiger got some shit worth every penny, having said that:

no, I said they make a flat braid in nylon I like. I dont like some of that knobby knylon burnnnnnnnnnn..........

so long as you aint hanging them like Esinem and some others you can use baling twine if it blows your dress up.

get a doublewide bitch up in the air and they start thrashing, you got at least 500 pounds of torque sometimes and a knot can reduce the rope strength by as much as 50% and add sweat in there......ugly shit.

good thing about hemp at 6mm handles it

there used to be a army engineer and rigging manual on the net (ebay) for about 5 bucks delivered US .... got all your tables there, but search rigging on the net, and skip all the steel cordage and rope sites ............

if you aint hanging em, again, not too tight and good to go, mostly, go slow

Ron

Oh lord,

As much as I swore I'd never get into another rope argument...

My favorite rope for general bondage has always been marine rope because of the soft, silky texture. I like my bondage sensual and it works well for that.

But no, to answer your question I have never felt the need to trade it in for natural fiber.

LOL, GotSteel...

Well, you are being a little bit deceptive there, the nylon cores in climbing ropes are unidirectional fibers which is not the case with your off the shelf hardware store rope, nor does it have a tough woven outer skin of different material in the local store either....unless it is indeed climbing rope.

I'm so not saying that crappy walmart rope is anything but crappy. Just pointing out that there's nothing inherently weak about the material.

I use the Braided with the filler. MADAM's husband told me about it first, and advised me to "WASH IT", to soften it up. Well it worked GREAT ! I used a Match to seal the ends, and placed the pieces in a DELICATE BAG. They are much softer now, but not as soft as his was. Maybe that didn't sound right? His softer than mine?  LOL
When I use to work at a hardwar store many years ago, we had a special tip on a soldering iron, for cutting too.

Unless you enjoy tying knots, I'd suggest something that is grippy like jute or hemp, which requires little or no knotting. I prefer jute as it is much lighter, handles better, polishes up with use and doesn't smell like a farmyard.  I also much prefer the look of natural fibre.

Until now, it was true that Japanese jute (asanawa) had to cost an arm and a leg. Firstly, it's dear to start with in Japan and their shipping costs are very high. Consequently, you can't even get it wholesale for less than 50c per foot.  I'm getting it made a little closer to home. Consequently, it need no longer be 10 times the price. How does $14.95 sound for 8m (26ft) shipped anywhere free? Take a look at the prices
