These are the same people who got chauffeured to school in new Cadillacs and daddy bought them a new car for their 16th birthday. This is that crowd.

I was also on a debate team...our teacher would often bring from our local newspaper subjects to debate. She would discuss the article before teams were chosen for sides on the issue. She would ask who was far and against the particular article and she would often make those for debate against. I loved it as well.

I think the debates on CM or mostly very good…people hold you to the facts and present their views clearly.

The Internet has made being a devils advocate easy and fun…I often right here on cm debate against my own beliefs…just for fun…And not surprisingly I learn by exploring my opposite point of view. Give it a try sometime.

Regarding the above ... some of the misunderstandings that are apparent, as well as linguistic barriers that this exposes here are tremendous proof to me of the supreme effort that Greedy puts into eliminating them between us.

You bring an important point here. English is not my first language and though I speak/read/write it relatively well, I will always have inherent flaws in my grammar and will often get mixed up with homonyms. My spelling isn't so bad, but then there are good spell checkers ;-)

It always strikes me as profoundly counter productive when people point out the flaws in my writing, or in anyone else's for that matter. What does it change? If they got the overall message, shouldn't they just move on with the conversation?

I consider this moving away from the imporant issues in the debate.

The problem with good debate etiquette, as i see it, is that there is only a section of the cm crowd that would actually use it. There are people like L'Tigress (yes, finger pointing) that enjoy poking the trolls and getting them riled up. And i have to admit i am guilty of my own troll poking - because as L'Tigress said, it is fun!

Well yes, and I've poked at them too. But the thing is, we also need to know when to stop, otherwise it isn't productive anymore and it only gets vicious.

It would have to be written into the TOS, and would i think, take a lot of the fun out of CM.

Oh gosh, no no no... I think the TOS is long enough. This isn't a rule issue. This is has more to do with the collective group. Who do we want to be?

And I really wouldn't want to see CM sanitized neither. A perfect example which isn't politically correct, yet mature, is Bill Maher's Real Time show. They don't put on white gloves, they make fun of a lot of things, but in the end, no one is yelling and screaming at one another because there is a level of maturity.

Sad but true, we are like the people who go to Nascar - the crashes are the best thing about the whole thing. The rest is interesting but blood and gore is where its at. (please excuse the bad grammar)

I get that. I think that's where I'm a little different than most.

I don't really see what I do here as debate since I'm not  here to try and convince anyone or to change their minds.

I just state my opinions and then let them go. If someone else got something from it then great. If not that's fine too.

The purpose of debate in such a forum isn't about trying to convince someone of our ideas or to change their minds. If this happens, but rather to flesh out ideas, broaden our perspectives and perhaps come up with alternative ways of viewing things.

If anyone's opinion changes, it is because they have chosen to do so based on their new perspective.

This requires a very open mind!! I sometimes like to play the devil's advocate as well :-)

Oh yes! I've discussed things from an opposing point of view to my own quite often. It is quite entertaining actually.

I am quite aware that what applies to me, in my personal life, does not apply to everyone else.

When I was on the debate team in high school the whole purpose was to convince the judges of your view...thus debating on  here would seem to me to be the same thing...convince those reading/participating that your viewpoint is the most logical/best idea.

Otherwise it's just people expressing their opinions without any kind of motivation.

To me its kind of like chess. I don't think I'll change the world here but I do like to hear what others think and I learn this and that. And I debate to try to keep my wits sharp, its either use it or lose it.

Its also kind of like people watching. We humans are so fucking strange and some of us are just absolute train wrecks while others are totally with it.

But its all fun to experience, and think I take something away from every conversation, one way or another.

It is nothing like chess....Out here there are no rules.  You can say whatever you like without regard to the truth.

If this were chess you would be thrown off of the table for moving your pawns as if they were the queen.

And you, Sir Domi, would be thrown off for taking a poop on the table ;-)
