persephonee -> Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/27/2010 5:17:33 AM)

i was just wondering if any of the girls know of an alternative treatment for premenstrual mood swings aside from the bc, YAZ.

i still smoke, and im over 35, so i keep getting told no about regular hormone based birth control....but i for sure have that PMDD thing...

Wondering if there is anything i could take to avoid the evilperse....shes not only extremely unpleasant, but she cries like a bitch now too....dont tell anyone....i have a reputation for being so even tempered and pleasing and whatnot....[8D]

Elizabeth666 -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/27/2010 5:24:37 AM)

The BC I take is called Portia. I don't have bad mood swings and such. But, I do also take the 21 day cycle and don't get my period. When I do though (ie. missing a day or whatever) it isn't ever bad. No bitchiness, no emotional roller coaster etc.

ETA - I'm 31, but I do smoke and although the doctor cautions me that my risk of cancer is higher due to that, he has not said certain pills wouldn't work for me

Yaz and Yasima(?) is on the alert list with the FDA because of clotting issues. Being a smoker and advanced in age does not help out either. Only thing I can advise is getting a hysterectomy but then I got mine because of heavy bleediing and ovarian cysts bursting every other month. Talk with you OB/GYN into looking for alternative forms of birth control.

Low dose SSRI's, sometimes limited to the 10 days a month surrounding your cycle, has had a fair amount of clinical success in PMDD. (Serafem is nothing more than prozac in a prety pink and blue capsule). Zoloft has also been highly effective for the same. As the doses are lower than in the treatment of clinical depression, and often only intermittnetly, the libido decreasing side effects aren't nearly as pronounced.

I agree with this but you may also want to try taking a good multi-vitamin and maca root. Maca root is purported to balance hormone levels in both men and women. While I don't have PMDD, I do have nasty PMS and ovarian cysts and the Macca root seems to help with both. I have also have found that it also helps with the libido.

cannabis is a fantastic mood regulator, among other things, for this slave.[:)]

UniqueRaven -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/27/2010 10:48:31 AM)

For long-term health and elimination of PMS (worked for me[;)])

Eliminate all caffeine except for tea (green preferred)

Eliminate all artificial sweeteners from your diet

Eliminate processed foods as much as possible (preservatives - ick) from your diet

Eat fresh foods as much as possible, or freshly prepared

Eat spicy foods in moderation - consider an aruyvedic diet (there are good books out there for this)

Take Flax Oil and, if needed, a multi-vitamin daily

Exercise, practice yoga, meditate

Edited to add: And feel free to drink wine! Hee hee!

I have never felt better in my life since doing the above, and cutting out all medications other than those absolutely necessary. My body is healthier, stronger, my moods are much more regulated and under control, and i almost never get sick. [:D]

Red raspberry leaf and black cohosh also are touted for their hormonal cycle balancing properties.
Soy, which contains natural estrogen, MAY help, depending upon your unique chemistry. While beneficial to the peri and post menopausal crowd, it may exacererbate symptoms in menstrating women with estrogen irregularities.

DesFIP -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/28/2010 4:03:02 PM)

Somebody beat me to it about Zoloft or other SSRI's. I went on Zoloft for depression but was pleased as punch when it not only lifted the suicidal thoughts but ended night sweats and hot flashes of perimenopause.

Made orgasming more difficult, I won't deny, and lowered my libido but the dosage I was taking 200 mg is much higher than you would use for PMDD.

Zechriel -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/28/2010 6:00:10 PM)

Good evening!
Please do not consider ever taking Yaz or Yasimin or Ocella. I took the Ocella for a while, about 2 years when I relocated. Another 2 years after that I began having lots of "digestive" problems, I thought. After another 2 years of constant pain when eating or swallowing, the ER admitted me for gallbladder surgery. Stayed a week in the hospital and went thru 2 procedures, finally taking it out altogether. But since the Navy will not release my med records (they missed the problem where the civilian ER and hospital doctors caught it so they are also responsible) I am up a creek with that lawsuit. But please do NOT take! Not fun being in the hospital with hubby on the road and with little um's at home. Good luck!
Love,
Zechriel [sm=soapbox.gif]

FelineFae -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/28/2010 6:07:11 PM)

If you know when you ovulate, you might try Femgest.
i used it trying to balance my insane high levels of estrogen, and noted that it really mellowed out the monthy mood roller coaster.
There were other side effects too, i gained a cup size in my bra and got a little weight in my tummy while on it.

persephonee -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/31/2010 8:18:12 AM)

i was on Zoloft 200 for a while...it was fairly okay...my only goal aside from the depression was to avoid sexual side effects...im *that* kind of girl yannow...it mildly affected me but not tooo horrible....however, then the Zoloft just stopped working on the depression.

Switched to Lexepro and that took care of it....i like that one. im about to start taking it again...being out of work has completely fucked me up emotionally. And that cant help my PMDD stuff atall....

afkarr -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (1/31/2010 1:25:08 PM)

Zoloft 200 is a fairly high dose, which makes sense considering the primary goal was to treat depression. ForPMDD use, I'd think 50 or 100 would be more common, and possibly only during the 7-10 surrounding the cycle.

Termyn8or -> RE: Too old and smokey for YAZ (2/4/2010 9:56:24 PM)

There is now a class action lawsuit against YAZ.
