TapedxCookie -> My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:22:21 PM)

Im wanting to make a flogger for Sir.
I found this nifty video tutorial that doesnt sound too hard to accomplish. ( http://www.the-iron-gate.com/videos/15 )
I went and got the rope today (and after poking around in this section of the forums, i fear i may have gotten the wrong stuff)
I got 100' (two rolls of 50') 1/4" diamond braid Nylon Rope (even though it only calls for 50' i figured im likely to need extra or mess up)

one thing I am confused about, is what they mean by standing end and running end... anyone have any advice or help?

Thank you!

ETA- when I asked Sir what his favorite color was, he said Blue (and black but only together hehehe) I had originally intended on dying the rope his favorite color (since it is white) but now im a bit unsure if thats something that I can do since the videos say you need to run it through a washer and dryer, and i use a laundrymat since i dont own a washer or dryer.... HELP! I want this flogger to be the BEST it can be. It's going to be a valentines day gift.

standing is (standing duh) the part that doesnt move, usually affixed. so in terms of your flogger it would be the end you are going to nail or whatever into the wood handle.

Running is the movable end, or business end.

Ron

wiki explains it differently, but comes to the same thing.

ok i must be dense because that didnt click either... i guess the best way is just to lay the rope out like in the video and try both ends and see which comes up with the desired result.

FelineFae -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:28:42 PM)

i think "standing" refers to the handle end, while "running" would be the lashes.

mnottertail -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:30:12 PM)

the standing end is the end not involved in the knot, so you dont have to say left and right, lets say you are right handed, coil a lenght of rope around your left palm, that is standing end.

take the rope that hangs and use your right hand to make a simple knot, by looping the rope and threading thru the loop, that is the running end.

TapedxCookie -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:32:18 PM)

ok that makes sense, but in the context of the video it doesnt... like I said, I'm going to just lay it out and play around untill it works out right.

Anyways, any thoughts on my rope that I bought? and the dying process?

mnottertail -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:35:01 PM)

dont get too hung up on standing and running and bights and hands and coils and whatnot, it will come to you (and yeah, standing and running doesnt always make sense in terms of some knots) ....read the thread gorean whips in the gorean lifestyles forum, they are talking about what your project is fundamentally, there at the last page, some good whip makers and flogger makers there. seek those folks out, I dont use much of the rope you use.

Ron

Thank you Ron! :) I'll go seek their help :)

mnottertail -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 2:43:39 PM)

ok, watched some of the video (he sort of mixes up standing and running at first..so)

anyway, the part of the rope he holds down is standing, and the part he crosses over that and moves is running. like I said, no big deal, dont get hung up on it.

Ron

see im not totally dense afterall! hehe well.. ok that may be questionable... either way. I hope it turns out...
I was going to play around and see if instead of dying the rope blue I can get some blue ribbon and somehow weave that into the handle... and maybe have a few of the lashes be the blue ribbon... i just dont know... i dont think dying it would be within my capabilities

If the rope is nylon, typically that doesn't "accept" dye well. You might just wind up with a big mess. i'd suggest trying to dye a small scrap piece first and see what happens.

Good luck, i'm sure he'll love it, because it was made with heart. [;)]

I realize you already have rope for this project, but if after your experiment you wish to make another, visit Twisted Monk's site. You can get customized colors of rope there. The prices are a bit more than nylon, but hemp is a better quality in my opinion, plus it is a natural fiber.

TapedxCookie -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 9:32:03 PM)

I decided against dying and just got some blue and black ribbons to tie in along with the rope... hopefully it works! I'll post pictures when I complete it! :)

TapedxCookie -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 11:23:29 PM)

ok thought of a question... too late to edit previous post so please excuse the double posting...

how do I seal the ends of the rope when im finished... for the handle part (which the ends are concealed, I just melted the nylon with a lighter) but im thinking that hard(ish) nylon on the ENDS of the flogger might REALLY hurt... and well since this is going to be used on me, and as Sir likes to say "im not a leather-butt yet", I'd like to not brutilize my buns....

Domin8tingUrDrmz -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/28/2010 11:54:39 PM)

Instead of burning the ends you can 'whip' the ends. This involves using a thread to tie the ends off in a fashion that the ends do not unravel. If you google "how to whip rope ends" you should find a plethora of sites that discuss this, many of those may be fisherman or boating sites, but the principle remains the sames.

Not quite true, but close. It will accept dye, but the final color will be a bit lighter than it would be with cotton. If using RIT brand "black", it will come out a dark steel grey. Below is a pic of 5 rope floggers I made with nylon rope. 2 are "black" and white, 3 are "purple" and white.

ooo did you just let the rope unravel???? those are BEAUTIFUL!!!

I need to get pictures of my flogger... im to the point of cutting the ends but im not sure how long to cut them....

WyldHrt -> RE: My first Toy project! (1/29/2010 12:53:03 AM)

Here's the pattern I used (and tweaked, lol):
http://www.pep-stl.org/~sir-raymonds-playthings/flogger-start.html
Note: on some, I fray half of the falls, and knot the others, soft yet stingy. I have since made some other floggers where I untwisted the nylon rope and then braided it tightly for more "bite". LadyPact owns one of these, done in purple and black. I still have to get her to take a pic of it, lol.

Welcome to the world of DIY toys! Explore, tweak the patterns you find, and have fun!

it was sooo hot making this flogger knowing that my butt is going to feel its sting in a few weeks :D I really hope Sir likes it! I plan on giving it to him for Valentines day, and i'm making him a yummy cake (better than sex cake) and maybe getting some massage oils because he loves for me to massage his back and legs (he says I have magic hands)
