derangedmaniac -> Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 6:28:20 AM)

Someone was mentioning how they'd stop watching the Oscars if Avatar won Best Picture there, so it intrigued me into starting this thread about the WORST winners of all time in any award show- Golden Globes, SAG, Emmys, Grammys, Oscars... etc.

I was absolutely shocked when 3C Mafia won for "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" over Dolly Parton's "Travelin' Thru". That heartfelt song that brought half the audience to tears lost to a half-assed rap song.. shame on you Academy!! It was a song about transexuals.. maybe they were being homophobic- but sheesh, that put the Academy in the hall of shame for me!!

I'm still pissed Marlee Matlin beat Glenn Close. The Academy is pretty consistently atrocious in their selections if you pay enough attention for long enough.

derangedmaniac -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 7:11:51 AM)

I might be biased but I love Marlee Matlin. But that year I wanted Sigourney Weaver to win, not Marlee or Glenn. Goes to show our difference in opinion, huh? Haha.

Lucienne -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 7:16:37 AM)

You weren't even born yet that year. How the hell could you have had preferences? ;)

The really awful thing is I've never even seen Children of a Lesser God, I just thought Glenn Close rocked. Still do.

Gary Sinise was totally ripped off when he didn't win Best Supporting Actor in 1994 for his protrayal of Lt. Dan in Forest Gump.

derangedmaniac -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 7:18:40 AM)

I've seen all five of the nominated movies and I've seen the award show that year in entirety. I'm a geek about the Oscars. Sigourney has been nominated three times, and she should've won for Aliens and Gorillas in the Mist- gah. I love Glenn Close, but Sigourney rocked that year. Marlee did too, however-- she was phenomenal in "Children of a Lesser God".

Thank you so much. Ever since he started playing in CSI I have been trying to figure out what else I had seen him in.

as to the OP...I have never cared enough who won or not, to let it bother me. But I remember the year Tom Hanks won over Daniel Day Lewis and I though my sister would never be happy again.

Johnny Depp should have one for pirates

derangedmaniac -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 8:39:45 AM)

Meh, that's where it gets complicated. Who should win, someone from a comedic movie, sci fi, fantasy, etc? We more than often see the dramatic actors in this category- things like fantasy (Pirates), sci fi, horror, comedy often get pushed to the side because they aren't viewed as good acting. It pays off more to make people sad and cry a lot.. I dunno.

Kramer vs Kramer over Apocalypse Now?

Al "Hoo Hah" Pacino (Scent of A Woman) over Denzel Washington (Malcolm X)?

Stinkeroos.

TheHeretic -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 2:19:38 PM)

Jethro Tull winning the Grammy for Hard Rock/Heavy Metal over Metallica's And Justice for All.

I know I'm in a small minority, but I never "got" Forrest Gump and can't believe it won over anything, let alone "Shawshank Redemption", which IMO is one of the all-time greatest movies ever made.

I'm in that minority.

Kinda like 'Life is a box of chocolates' vs "Get busy living or get busy dying"

How could people be so...obtuse.

Reminds of me Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain.. [:@]

Well, I'm in good company :)

I agree about crash....it was a good movie, but I didn't consider it Oscar material.

Meant to say earlier.....Children of a Lesser God is in my list of all-time favorite movies, too, love it. Ba-boom-a-rang-rang-rang..... :)

Thank You!! I was crushed over that one. Brokeback was one hell of a film. I cry hysterically every time it's on.

I think when Cher was nominated for "Mask" and didn't win and then they gave it to her for "Moonstruck." Seemed like they were trying to say they were sorry. I saw both movies and really she was incredible in Mask, but just ok in Moonstruck.

Yea, ok, I love Cher. That woman has managed to stick around for a long ass time, even if most people think her relevance is with drag queens.

As for Gary Sinese, he was in Forest Gump, but also in Apollo 13, and Ransom. And he is so fucking hot! I have a big thing for him and Edward Norton. Wonder if I could ever get the two of them to do a threesome with me?[:)]

EbonyWood -> RE: Worst Award Show winners (1/31/2010 7:10:15 PM)

Reverse happened for Crowe.

Won for Gladiator but not A Beautiful Mind? Washington wins for Training Day? Pffft.

It was like "Well we fucked up before and gave you one so... we are even"

And Norton should have won for American X.

"The Academy" is merely people in the business. I read a story years back - maybe just an opinion piece - that lamented about how lazy some of the Academy members were and that they gave their ballots to others around them (friends and even employees) to fill out. This time of year right before the Oscars the movie studios produce dvd copies of recent movies or flicks that are still in theatrical release often called "screeners" to distribute to Academy members to privately screen the films in their home for awards consideration with watermarks and regular on screen admonitions not to distribute the contents of the disc. Evidently those same Academy members can't be bothered to keep those from getting on the internet, either.

OP, the year that Jethro Tull won the Grammy for best Heavy Metal album was pretty laughable.
