nah not racist....sizeist perhaps:) LOL nah, just being vanity fair....along with all the other magazines I dont read I remember once being talked into going to the local library and standing watch while my girlfirend tore off the cover of "Vogue" to stick to her generic mag cover so it would be seen poking out the top of her bag, cos it was the in thing to read and she wanted so bad to be "popular" ptooey

I see the race baiting continues at CM. lol I LOVE Vanity Fair magazine, their yearly photo spreads with Annie Leibovitz are the bomb-diggity! I agree that VF is not targeting the world audience, they are targeting the white affluent, fashionista types. As for BET, this counter-argument is getting so old. I mean, just as people supposedly use the 'race' card for any and every issue, the opposite is that people love to use the 'bet' or 'Ebony Mag' card. Get over it. These things were started in the first place to address a gross imbalance that was being perpetuated in the print and visual media in regards to black and Latinos. Ebony has had people of other races in their magazine, that includes mixed race as well as features on people of Euro-descent. And to be frank, the Vanity Fair, Hollywood and '08 Vogue issue only reinforces why mags like Ebony and stations like BET still have a place in our society. And this is not exclusive to those media's, white-washing has had a significant place in mainstream publishing, with even authors of European descent being effected when they dare write tales with main characters who are of other races. As for 'imagine if we had a White Entertainment Television' well Majority of all American broadcast networks are White Entertainment Television (you don't need a 'label' to make that FACT true), although Latinos are on their way to becoming the Majority demographic in this country. And as we know Latinos are basically Spanish speaking people that are either a combination of Euro & Native American race or Euro and African. but here's a FACT that you might want to consider, most visual entertainment i.e. television programming that is pumped out across the world has a heavy concentration of shows featuring people of euro-descent. Considering most of the world is made up of people of color, you have to wonder what's that all about? Even Stevie Wonder can see something is wrong. FACT: At least four-fifths of the world's population is made up of people of color. FROM THE MOUTH OF THE CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT: Using 2010 as the base reference, the big gainer in the population derby will be blacks or sub-Sahara Africans. This group will expand almost 133% to 2.7 billion by 2060. By the middle of this century blacks will represent 25.38% of world population, which is up dramatically from the 8.97% they recorded in 1950. - National Policy Institute There numbers from 1950 seem suspect but the above is taken from a far right (dare I say pro-white) publication, whether it be used as a tool for promoting propaganda or not, it's clearly not from a place of bleeding heart liberal sentiment. I think we one BET and an Ebony Mag is not the end of the world, considering. ;)

Just as in the media. The situation in the States is marginally better than here in the UK, where we have had 'banana boat culture' since the end of the Second World War and the partitioning of India when we opened our borders to immigrants from the Indian sub-continent and the Caribbean. It's almost like a social and cultural apartheid, where barriers of skin colour, gender and sexual orientation still exist. Here in London you won't have a problem finding a Nigerian security guard, a Somalian minicab driver, walk into any Job Centre, hospital, or local government office and you will see the sort of diversity you just don't see in the media, the City, politics or the entertainment industry. 42 years ago Martin Luther King was assassinated but his message failed to reach our shores and even today his dream remains unfulfilled. I don't see this however as a white issue, it's a people issue and I would even venture that non-whites such as the black community and Muslims are just as much oppressed and stigmatized by those from within their own communities as much as they are by white people. Tokenism just doesn't cut it, which is why electing a woman Prime Minister or a black President is just a small step on a journey we have to make otherwise in the media, entertainment industry, politics and business those barriers will remain together with the cultural and social apartheid we all appear to accept today.

I don't think VF is racist, I tend to think along the lines of those that said it's only aiming at its target audience. Lots of shit wrong in this world, I'm not going to get bent over the paleness of their cover.

Are we trying to find fault where there isn't any or just trying to be controversial? Somewhere, someone has mentioned.."What about Ebony and Vibe?". What about all the other TV channels that are directly for one demographic or another? Is it messed up to run a Spanish speaking ad to bring in revenue from that part of the population? Hell no it's not racist..It's like LP stated on another post..I thought it was but evidently it's not so common sense. (More or less what she wrote)

The photos are hurtful only because they truthfully reflect the insular world of Hollywood tastemakers and shot-callers. What most people outside of Hollywood might not understand, is how tiny the community is. The overwhelming majority of scriptwriters and directors live within a 20 minute drive of each other in the Hollywood Hills/ Encino suburb of the city. They eat at the same restaurants, send their kids to the same schools, bounce from studio to studio and circulate within the same tiny inbred gene pool of ideas and influences. There is a very good reason why Hollywood movies and TV shows all seem to resemble each other. Its why every new actress is funneled into a giant Central Casting blender to make them into the same skinny blonde sylph like model, only to be jettisoned in a year or two for the newer model. The Hispanic community of Boyle Heights in East LA is as remote and alien to them as Helmand Province in Afghanistan, and Compton is something they have only read about on the back of a rap CD cover. The luckiest actresses in Hollywood might be the ones that didn't make this cover.
