Ok so I have a question I found out today that I have to have my wisdom teeth taken out and I was just wanting to find out if anyone could tell me what its going to be like I have been told a lot of different things and I already hate the idea of having surgery again because I had surgery for something else 2 years ago and didn't go so good and no one told me what to look out for then so I want to go into this one knowing everything I can so maybe it won't be so bad anyway thank you to all who take the time to answer my question

they make an X cut and yank em, you will suck on aspirin a few days, not the end of the world.

I was not trying to come across like it is the end of the world I am just wanting to know what to expect sence I don't know anything about it

It isn't major surgery. Some people don't even get knocked out for it. Afterwards, you are likely to experience some pain and swelling, maybe some bruising. The doctor usually gives a script of Vicodin or Percocet for a couple of days. Aspirin is not recommended because it slows the clotting process.

All in all, it isn't typically a major issue.

One word of caution.. dry sockets. do NOT suck on anything. including pain pills

a dry socket is when the blood clot either falls out, or doesnt form right, leaving a hole straight to the root.. and hurts like a bitch. No smoking, if you smoke... no straws... no candy... liquids for the first day... soft foods only the next.

google the term, you will find more.

   I had all 4 of my wisdom teeth removed when I was 12 (2 operations, left side then right side or right then left, I don't remember). You go in, they numb you up,sedate you, have you count back from 100..99..9...........  When you wake up, you laugh or giggle for the next hour or so.  I don't know whether it's because it was so long ago or I hated my crooked teeth so badly I would endure a lot,but I don't remember that much pain. I also had 4 other teeth removed soon after that in one operation.

They might or might not use the sedative on you that gave me such a nice rush to come off of (sodium pentathol, I think??).  I don't think they use that anymore. The second time they put me under, they asked me if it would be alright and would it scare me too much to bring in  an oxygen tank standing by? Sedating a kid is tricky.  I don't think they use that anymore.

They didn't knock me out for mine just the same jaw numbing stuff they use for fillings and simply pulled them out.  Not pleasant, but not fatal though hearing them coming out of the jawbone was eerie.  They tried to use nitrous oxide as well, but as the smell makes me nauseous, I never take them up on it.   Also, it was recommended that I swish salt water in my mouth for the first week.

Mine were impacted and I expected the worst, but it was pretty much a breeze. They knocked me out with an IV, then injected novocaine. When they woke me up, I had to ask if they had done it. I napped the rest of the day, next day went to Little League with my kids, and never even filled the pain prescription. No pain to write home about, no swelling at all, I felt like nothing had even happened. Hopefully you'll be as lucky!

The result of not having them removed when needed is far worse than anything that will happen during the extraction or recovery.

They do not always sedate you, it depends on the dental place doing it. I went to Western Dental,  and they wouldn't do sedation, and laughing gas to help calm me down and make me loopy so I wouldn't be so frightened was 65 dollars out of my own pocket since it wasn't covered by my insurance. And I was NOT laughing or giggling or happy in any sort of way after the experience, it hurt and the vicodin they gave me didn't even begin to touch the pain. I had all four ripped out at once.

How old were you when you had it done? Maybe that makes a difference pain-wise.

I don't remember but it was adult early 20's.

I still have 3 of mine and the 4th was removed when I was 25...recently the fellow next to that one was removed and whilst she did a good job I am not going back to that one (I only went to her temporarily as I was annoyed about my one as she has an attitude in general I am not willing to put up with anymore). however, that one did a good job but she wont be the one for my remaining time in the UK as she appears to me to be more looking for making the money then to be focused on what is necessary to be done.

Painkillers I got from her for 3 days and afterwards I was supposed to be left on my own...after those three days I tried the normal painkillers once the pain came through, such as ibuprofen and whatever that stuff is called but it was not sufficient for the pain and so I decided to take my night meds for my fibromyalgia at daytime instead which was my rescue as every time I took it, it numbned the pain binnen 1-2 minutes...therefore, whilst I aim to get off those meds after my studies (I am taking amitriptylin 25mg) whenever I will have another tooth extraction I will go and try to get them and if I have to get them via internet resources...it would really have driven me nuts if I would not have had those meds (amitriptylin numbns my nerves, according to my GP, which is why it helps me that I don't wake up at night time in immense pain due to muscle stiffness all over my body).

And so I simply thought if it numbns my nerves...it should help for that as well and it did [:D]

I had mine removed two years ago (age 47). I only had wisdom teeth on my right side. Some people have none, some have two and some have all four. They put me under to remove them and it was a breeze. No real pain after the procedure - I didn't even take the Vicodin they prescribed. No swelling. Nobody could tell that I had been to the oral surgeon. There is no way to predict how this or any other medical procedure will go for any given individual but I had a really smooth time with it.

i had mine cut out when i was 18. they put me under and cut them out.. and they also stitched my gums back shut. came home with a mouth full of gauze as i had all 4 removed. i have a small jaw & TMJ so my jaw was mega sore.. i was eating soft food for two weeks straight.. and it took a month before i could chew right.. as i kept getting food in the areas that had been cut on and it hurt. . i took ibproufen for a week..

Thanks everyone I know everyone is different and so know really knows how it will be for be but sence a can't take any over the corner pill meds and really can't take any pain meds at all I just wanted to try and find out as much as I can about how bad it hurts what to expect when I go in and all of that
