Hello Collarme message board! I am currently looking for safe ways to remove my body hair (legs and genitals specifically) aside from shaving. My big problem with shaving is the frequency of upkeep, and because dispite my best efforts, I often get razor burn in some of my more sensitive areas.
Thank you for your time, and advice!

Perhaps depilatory cream would work well? The results tend to last a little longer than shaving. Just use caution with them as they can severely irritate the skin if left on for more than ten minutes. Oh, and the stuff reeks, too.

You could of course attempt permanent hair reduction with laser hair removal. Keep in mind it's expensive and in no way permanent, however. At best it thins your hair out over repeated sessions, and it can be very painful. Been there, done that.

To date, the only real method of permanent hair removal unfortunately remains electrolysis. Don't be fooled by the intergalactic sea of misinformation and scam artist marketing out there. There seems an infinite score of zany devices and gizmos that will supposedly remove hair with ease and permanence, but it's all complete fiction.

For razor bumps and skin irritation, application of clear aloe and other such remedies help. There is a product named Tend Skin which reduces the appearence of razor bumps and the like, too. After shaving you apply it on affected areas with a cotton swab.

Hope this helps.

Waxing is also a wonderfully masochistic way of removing hair ;)

Exfoliating is also helpful to remove the top layer of dying skin and preventing ingrown hairs which can not only be uncomfortable, but ugly.

WARNING:  Tend Skin is a decent product - - However - - Not for use after exfoliation.  i advise on using it sparingly.  It has been known to cause chemical burns (speaking from experience).  Please check their website before use.  my esthitician recommended the stuff....so i waxed, applied, exfoliated, applied...continued...and....well....a horrible mess.

Pure Aloe is wonderful (stay clear of stuff with dyes and perfumes).  Boiron makes a calendula lotion which aides in the healing of skin, but i found it best to wait awhile before using it or it tends to sting a bit.  A natural powder (i like Burts Bees) is also soothing.

Good luck.

In that case, why not just use pliers? [:D]

When I started shaving I used to dab on witch hazel afterwards, it was wonderfully cool and soothing [:)]

I'm in the process of having lasering done, I'm now running the razor over about once a week instead of every couple of days, and no nasty stubble. It's pretty expensive but worth it IMO. Pain-wise, the girl told me I have quite a high pain threshold[&o]. Something to do with being a masochist maybe![:D]

Contemplating laser.... Did the brazilian wax thing for awhile - i am NOT a masochist and the very first time i cried for my mother, lol.  It made my skin so red and puffy, it wasn't worth it.  i found a men's close shave norelco does the trick for now.  Cheaper than $60/mo to wax.

I am an esthetician, I do waxing and i can say that i does hurt but if you can stan the pain, Its breef then it does go a way, go for it. Use a professional product that your waxer recomends for ingrowen hairs, also get a growth inhebiter, it will help stop the hair form gorwing back. also when you shave you blunt the end of the hair so it comes in sharper looks darker and thiker as well as itches, when you wax there is no blunt end it comes in finde and softer and if you wax for a while it you will eventually wont have anything to wax. Laser is aslo another way to go but it does cost alot your lookingat about 500 depending on what you wax, cuz hair grows in 3 different stages and it takes a while to do larger areas of the body and will need to get all of the hair. DONT WAX your self, it doesnt work properly, you need the right wax as well as you need to be able to hold the skin tight, and pull the right way for it to work properly, improper waxing can cause breakage and buring also ripping of the skin. So there is my 5 cents.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Body Hair Removal (3/27/2006 12:35:43 AM)

i could stand the pain, but i could not stand the reactions to my skin  (i have wimpy skin). i can't put much in the way of chemicals on my skin either.  Master didn't like me coming to him looking like i was already beaten, so i got the norelco.  Trust me, i'm high maintenance, lol.

If you have light hair laser isnt an option, at least thats what I've been told. I'm really bummed about that.

I use tweezers on my pubes, you can pull the hair out from the root and it takes ages to grow back and leaves you silky smooth. Its a really nice sensation too as your doing it [:)]...if you like that kinda sensation that is...

I would go for waxing for your legs and agree with previous posts, get it done professionally.

Don't feel all that bad. I was supposedly an "ideal" candidate for treatment, having pale skin and dark hair. Around six months after six sessions there was very little result, but a lot of cost. I guess it might work if you repeat the process endlessly (go capitalism), but I don't know many people who have that type of indefinite disposable income for a cosmetic treatment that cannot be guaranteed as permanent.

milkingpup -> RE: Body Hair Removal (3/27/2006 11:21:54 PM)

there is always perm hair removal with lazer treatments.

Lierin -> RE: Body Hair Removal (3/28/2006 9:00:28 AM)

Ive used Magic Powder,and it works great,plus it's cheap($1.50 a can).[:)]

Be careful about the removal creams. They are harsh chemicals that dissolve hair so imagine what it is doing to your skin. I had a bad experience when I tried it on areas more sensitive than legs, got a nice pretty red rash...
