You missed the point. It isn't a journalists to judge whether there should be ideas in a given speaker's speech, or not.

Funny, I thought that it was precisely a political journalists job to report on a politicians speech. Noting that one may be devoid of ideas is certainly part of reporting.

And I agree. That's where we lost Sanity and Heretic.

Well I didn't see any threads started on it, and I can think of a few posters who would have jumped all over that one, so your probably right.

No, Muse.  That's where you headed off into the weeds.  Couldn't that lead have just as easily read:

"Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin spoke to an enthusiastic crowd at the Tea Party Convention, displaying the speaking style that shot her into the spotlight as the '08 Vice Presidential nominee.  She challenged the Obama administration with sarcasm, and homestyle homily, bringing the crowd to their feet with chants of "Run, Sarah, Run!"

Would you find bias there?

Musicmystery -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 12:49:40 PM)

Wouldn't the next logical question be "What's the platform?"

Nothing is the original lede is offensive except to conservative colored glasses. It's a statement of fact.

Could it have bent over to be more vapid? Sure.

I read my news to figure out what's going on. Thus, I apply common sense when reading it.

Gotcha is a simple game. Save it for actual abuses. We've plenty of those.

servantforuse -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 12:53:16 PM)

I hope it's better than Obama's platform. I think it had the word "change" in it.

Musicmystery -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 12:55:05 PM)

Don't look to me to defend Obama.

The original contention was that Palin and the Tea Party rally had a dearth of ideas.

Interesting that everyone readily concedes that point.

servantforuse -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 12:57:42 PM)

It's a little early in the process for her to develope a platform..

Musicmystery -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 12:58:36 PM)

Hence the AP lede.

Sanity -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:08:12 PM)

domincharge was right in this point, he sounded exactly like me in fact.  [;)]

Once "journalists" take it upon themselves to decide what a speaker should or should not be saying in their speeches they're no longer reporting, they are pontificating. The AP reporterette who judged that Palin should have had been enumerating ground breaking ideas as opposed to saying what was pleasing to her and (obviously pleasing to the crowd) wasn't being true to journalistic integrity once she began judging, she was giving a political speech of her own.

No, according to the AP reporterette's political philosophy Governor Palin needed a dearth of new ideas - but in reality, all the Governor has to do to please the populist crowd is stay true to old tried and proven conservative beliefs, which she does marvelously well.

A journalist who went to cover a political rally and didn't report on the political stances wouldn't be a journalist.

Sanity -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:15:22 PM)

She's not a journalist if she tells you what should have happened, she's a pundit.

Well, at least we all agree that no one at the rally had any ideas.

So by your argument, seems nothing happened, and it shouldn't have been covered at all.

domiguy -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:24:48 PM)

The "Tea Party."   What a laughable group of nitwits.  It is their fifeen minutes so enjoy.  They will soon be as forgotten as Lou Dobbs Immigration tirades.

Are they a movement or a part...Better not be a party or that does spell some problems.  At the moment being conservatively fiscal sounds nice.  Was Palin overly fiscal?

However, at some point the economy will recover and we will be discussing the same old bullshit that seperates the parties.  The Tea Party will be over.

More white noise.

Few have the ability to recognize this fact.

Sanity -> RE: Hate Palin, Love Palin (2/7/2010 1:27:35 PM)

I would say thats a racist comment, except you're white. [:D]

Nobody had any ideas that you or the AP wanted to hear.

The ideas are there, and they are very popular ideas.

I'm off to a Super Bowl Party.

There'll be lots of enthusiasm, and probably not many ideas.

I wonder what the AP will report.

They will be remembered for their impact in the same way Ross Perot is remembered and Ralph Nader is remembered, as being the spoilers of  Election '10
