StrangerThan -> RE: Bill O’Reilly Compares Tea Baggers to Vietnam War Protesters (2/10/2010 7:57:49 PM)

There are three things I really like about the movement.

The first is, it's about time America started holding politicians accountable and if it takes being rowdy, unruly, and pissed, then so be it.

The second is the immediate and continued denunciation of them by the left. It's just damned fun to watch.

The third is, they're starting to produce some results.

reminds me in some ways of the thousands of people who stormed the capitol building in Tennessee when they were considering passing a state income tax law, and the shaking, shattered politicians who had to be taken for medical treatment. Nah, not because anyone hurt them, but because they were scared enough to shit their pants.

That's the problem with federal politics. Ain't no one shittin their pants. They're still proclaiming themselves to be "public" servants.

I gotta admit, im mixed on the tea baggers.

On one hand, its good that americans can come together to protest what they dont like. Im thankful i live in such a country that allows this. And often this kind of movement can get things done.

On the other hand, its worrisome that all the can do is come together and complain. No one is coming up with any solutions. As the saying goes... if you arent part of the solution...

Thadius -> RE: Bill O’Reilly Compares Tea Baggers to Vietnam War Protesters (2/10/2010 8:13:31 PM)

That was supposed to be part of the purpose of the convention they held this past weekend. Also at least for me, it was very cool to meet a bunch of folks that had the same mindset on the direction we have been headed for quite some time and what we could do as individuals to make a difference.

The big difference as I see it is that the antiwar movement was united on a single issue, while the teapartiers don't have as much focus.  It's mostly about insane fiscal policies, and the corrupt Wall Street suits getting their bonuses and bailouts like clockwork.

Come on, let's face it, the teabaggers have no idea what they are protesting.

They are just having fun being pissed off.

Look at the signs and listen when they are interviewed.  Each one of them talks about a different issue from abortion, to illegal immigrants, to federal taxes being illegal, to the bailouts, to Obama and socialism, to opposition to gay rights and on and on and on.

These people are primarily the result of fear-mongering by Glenn Beck and Dick Armey.

The majority have no clue about the issues they are protesting, they just got bored hanging out at the trailer park drinking Milwaukee's Best and having belching contests.

Wow you convinced me. Very strong arguments to support your points.

OK, so what solutions did this convention propose?

I don't know each member was supposed to take the idears back to the their respective trailer parks and Klan halls to figure out a platform....

Edited to add:

There was also a lesson on where to keep crib notes for speeches..

So you attended the for profit event? At $550 a ticket? Are you pleased that Tancredo got paid to give an opening speech that included calling for bringing back a prominent symbol of the Jim Crowe era? Do you wonder, after hearing him, why a substantial number of Americans view the tea party movement as essentially a racist movement?

Some obvious points.

Some in the movement probably don't like Obama becase he's black.

Most could care less. They're tired of political doublespeak, their future being sold, and their bank accounts being robbed by politicians.

What must leave liberals dumbstruck is that they've not been able to kill this beast by using the nuclear option of crying racism. I know they must be dumbstruck because in listening to outlet's like CNN, I've heard everything from derision and scorn, to assignation of blame to the movement for recent Democratic electoral losses. It's like they have a zombie in the background who is sightless and drooling and constantly pushing the Go Nuclear button, but everyone else has pulled out the sniper rifles and machine guns... and yet, the movement persists.

I've heard and read many pundits and posters claim that personalities like Glen Beck stirred up the anger in these folks. Got a clue for you, people like Beck don't stir up the anger, they tap into it. The anger is real. I've been hearing it across that vaunted space often referred to as mainstream America for years. It's not new. It's not directed just at democrats. The movement itself was formed by conservatives and probably mostly is fed by conservatives, but the anger itself was not created by this movement. The anger existed prior to it. It has been simmering across the nation for a long time.

Like many movements, this one stands a decent chance of imploding. Only time will be the judge of whether or not that happens. But I can tell you this, liberals haven't helped their cause with the plan of attack they've used against the tea party people for the simple reason that they've addressed everything about the movement except the real anger driving it. That anger has nothing to do with race, which is why the zombie in the background isn't having much effect except among those who want his button to work. By clinging to him however, liberals are stoking the fires as much as anyone, and for some reason, can't see why.

I can imagine Regan standing up at one of these events saying something like.. it's not about race, dummy.

The other thousand points of derision don't work either. Big money drives every political movement. Pointing out that big money drives this one is about as effective as carrying a black pot and pointing fingers at someone else for carrying a black kettle.

I don't care for causes or activists in most cases, mainly because their intent is often to use the rights granted in the constitution to limit someone else's rights. I like this one even though if for no other reason than it is entertaining to watch the media be dumbfounded by it despite their attempts to eradicate it.

It's just damned funny sometimes.

Actually, they're about 12 years overdue. But I know how much you need to make your Bush point.

You were the one who said it was 'simmering for a long time'.  I personally couldn't give a fuck about assigning blame in the past.

I will never understand why people make statements that are essentially oxymorons. You don't give a fuck then wasted your time doing so. I guess the 8 years was an arbitrary moment in time.

gotcha

Any reason you have a problem with logic?

You involved yourself. Not involving yourself is as simple as slinking off somewhere else. I'm sure there's somewhere that crappy little one-liners are praised and appreciated.

If those signs were the 10 most offensive signs HuffnPuff could find, the list is really pathetic.

What the Tea Party really needs is a Jesse Jackass clone with a slogan as clever as "Stay out the Bushes"[8|]
