On the very interesting Political Compass Website where elsewhere I have invited others to participate, there is an interesting section on Iconochasms, where it tests one's knowledge of who said what.

One particular question struck my interest, on the subject of Iran and it's drive to create a nuclear technology, as follows ;

8. Who said that the introduction of nuclear power will both provide for the growing needs of Iran's economy and free remaining oil reserves for export or conversion to petrochemicals ?

The answer from a list of four people that include Henry Kissinger, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz and Donald Rumsfeld
was Henry Kissinger who wrote ;

Henry Kissinger , as Secretary of State in the Ford administration, 1976. Nevertheless the other three all held key national security posts in the same administration, which endorsed Iranian plans for a massive nuclear energy industry. Further, it encouraged a multi-billion dollar deal that would have allowed Iran control of enormous amounts of plutonium and enriched uranium.

So what is going on in Iran now and the US's posturing over the subject, could it in fact be though nuclear power in Iran is a good idea for it will free up the oil for export and thus ease the burden of governments and economies, but they just don't trust the current regime and are in fact drawing plans for yet more regime change.

The political situation in Iran is one where the people, possibly the majority don't want the ruler, and with the continuous attrition from activist groups, the leader of Iran's government becomes more and more uncertain, it is most likely he will fall, so change will happen, but is that change going to be fast enough ? Is it the West needs the oil sooner rather than later, they are preparing to go in there and take control by force of arms, so they can get their hands on all that wealth and do with it what they did with Iraq's Oil ?

But as with regards to the Iconochasms, take a look, as it is very much a case of how well do you know your chosen political idol.

Oh, and one last condemning sentence given the present UK Chilcott inquiry into the Iraq war ;

4. Who described the UK's decision to join the US invasion of Iraq as in the British national economic interest ?

No less than Prime Minister Gordon Brown in The Scotsman, 4th May 2005, page 4, then not prime minister of course, but the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Bastards !

Realistically you also have to ask why Iran needs the nuclear fuel to be of a certain grade for power production and why they are so reluctant to let external parties process it to stop it's use for other means. Seems to me that they only agree to the minimum of what they need to, at any point in time.
