Arpig -> RE: giving your cat medicine- HOW? (2/15/2010 5:53:04 PM)

I have had cats all my life and have had to give them medicine often. Basically Lady E is right, but I would add to gently stroke their throats in a downward motion to get them to swallow. Also when you pop the pill in, get it way in the back...otherwise the cat will spit it across the room.
Liquid medication is basically the same procedure, but I have found they often will just barf it back up, so I prefer pills.

My cat is not caged. He has me domesticated.

There ya go, Lady A...typo fixed!

OK, I am off my high horse about the keeping of pets, but something just occurred to me.

Why not an injection ? Hold on now, subcutaneous and ntramuscular injections are not all the difficult. Heavy drug users and diabetics inject themselves all the time. So get the right instrustion, stick the little prick (ENTIRELY JOKING) and be done with it. If the drug would work anytime why didn't the vet just shoot him up with it ? Obviously it needs to be continued.

So fuck all this fussing and fighting, why not an injection ? Rare is the drug that has better efficacy when taken orally. The only exceptions would be in the case of an upper digestive tract problems, and this is not that.

todays med to the cat did not go well. she is wearing it- and licking it off now.

That's okay Hunky, if she's licking it off she's still getting it.

Now there's a novel idea. Powderize it and paste them with it or whatever. Their natural desire will take care of the rest.

My ginger cat is my dom at home...gosh did he show attitude at some guys in the past when he did not approve of them...now...in regards to medicine...he is the same pain...I tried to give him the de-worming tablet...he spit it out about 3-5 times...the remains of it I gave then to my youngster who was only supposed to receive half such a tablet anyway...so I decided that should approx. fit the bill...then, many weeks later I tried it again with a new one, as I still had his one, considering he had the share with the one from my girl summer before...and again...I think about 10 times he did spit it out and gosh did he show his temper with hissing big time...I can't remember that I have ever had a cat who hissed so full of confidence at me as he does at times (not often, but when he starts to do it then he does it well [&o])

Therefore in the future when I get that tablet for him I give that pleasure my vet to sort out...am quite fedup of his attitude about that damn tablet [>:]

My others were ok, my other boy spit it out once, then I turned him over on his back and put it back into his mouth...where it stayed with that second attempt [>:]

I am suppose to note if the cat is sleepy.   How does one tell?   I mean cats in general sleep alot.

nikkki -> RE: giving your cat medicine- HOW? (3/1/2010 4:29:46 PM)

Daddy Lorenzo and i have 9 cats happy healthy and they're all sleeping right now.
I have given my cats about 200mg of vitamin C to help build their immune system when sick. I do this 1-3 times a day until i see improvement. It has helped for runny noses, blocked ears, runny eyes, open wounds and more. My cats can tell me how she/he wish to be treated and we all get along just fine.
Hope this tit bit helps.
