What exactly is a "casual" bdsm encounter?  It may seem like a stupid question, but honestly the term leaves a great deal to be operationalized.  It sounds to me like any sort of polyamorous arrangement is considered "casual" by the OP.  Monogamy is the only context in which meaningful intimacy can live.  In my monogamies, I have found distance, frustration, and ultimately some level of abuse.  Why?  It is simple.  We had to try to be EVERYTHING for each other.  It just isn't possible for one person to fill every void in another human being (even a healthy one that is capable of meeting most of their own needs).  The pressure was astoundingly high.  I am sure many monogamous couples do not find it so overwhelming, but the reality is that plenty do including quite a few who absolutely will not admit such.

So just what is casual play?  I guess a loving, deep relationship between two unmarried, but life commited people would be casual.  I guess a scene with a dear friend with whom you've both laughed at parties together, cried at gravesides, and shared life over the long haul would be causal.  I suppose spouses who have opened their marriage to include others dear to them would be a causal relationship as well.  That's fine.  Those definitions can be owned and defended by the OP if he'd like.  In all cases, I know otherwise.  I know because I live it and my life is greatly blessed by the presence of these people in my life and in my bed.  I've said it before and I'll say it again.  I'm a very lucky girl.

Actually, that is a news report of another news report of a study having been done. The questions asked of those in the study are not provided, nor is there any explanation for how they weeded out any bias due to people being reluctant to admit to emotional distress.

I note that only 8% of the 1,311 people asked claimed to have had a sexual experience with a "casual acquaintance".

That 8% is the combined males and females who responded. Indeed, at times their numbers appear to conflict.
