SweetNika -> House Warming Party... (2/24/2010 4:05:09 PM)

The past couple of months have been very emotional for me but several weeks ago it took a wonderful but unexpected turn. NM and I signed a lease together on our home. I love to entertain and over our long relationship we have not had alot of chances to entertain together because of our living situations. I would like to have a house warming party with some of his close friends and mine but I am nervous. I have not hosted a house warming party before and have not hosted a dinner party or any thing of that sort in years although I love to entertain and cook.

So I am seeking advice on the does and don'ts of having a house warming party especially the menu. Lol Are house warming parties sit down dinners or appetizers? Lol

I never threw one-  but is sure sounds fun!

congrats!

The last one I threw was BYOB.  We provided the mixers and a 6' subway sandwich for eats.  Depends on your friends and the tone you want to set.

I think I would keep it simple.

If you have more people than table seating space, i would suggest finger foods that are not messy - sandwiches cut in 1/4ths or on small buns, baby quiches, cheeses, crackers, raw veggies, etc.

That way they can walk around and mingle without having to use fork and knife to eat.

Good luck in the new home!

It all depends, i have been to full sit down dinners catered with cocktails before, i have been to buffets, i have been to cocktail ones, and i have been to BBQ ones. It depends a lot also on what time of day it is also. You can have a theme - i had a friend who had a theme one once of international and people bought them things that represented different countries and they had international cuizine (yeah, they were strange friends lol ended up with a lot of wine and alcohol and beer lol), you can simply put different foods and drink in different rooms, this is pretty cool as the housewarming is to show off your home. Some themes could be Kitchen for love, and have everyone bring you a recipe and the gift could be something for the kitchen, or library blowout, where people bring you books to stock your library or office. Its all based on your imagination but all in all, its to show off your house in a intimate setting of friends.

It all depends on what you want and what work you want to put into it. You can have it very formal which may including catering and cocktail dress or you can have it as simple as finger foods and alcohol, and casual dress.

What do you and them enjoy doing the most? There really are no rules, except make it easy for your guests and REGISTER so they can get you something you may want or need. If you don't, you may end up with everyone bringing you wine! lol.

Check out some books at your local bookstore. Keep it simple so you won't drive yourself nuts.

Check recipies on delish, food network and cooks.com...

Google housewarming parties and see what comes up..

Most of all have fun!

oh , and don't forget to have a good time, that may seem like an easy order, but it's not .Nothing is worse then haveing a bunch of great people around with nothing to do, so don't be afraid to let yer little inner child out a bit and indulge in some games, like naked twister, charades, or russian rulet

barelynangel -> RE: House Warming Party... (2/24/2010 5:47:23 PM)

Oh, i just talked to a friend of mine and she said if you wnat to make it fun, have like a dinner mystery game or such.

Dinner and a murder

dinner party mysteries

These are really cool, you can do a search for a cool one you like. Sorta the Mr. Blimbo did it in the bathroom with a vibrator. You could maybe reverse the gift things and have a treasure hunt where your friends find little appreciation gifts around your home.

why not throw a painting party?

lol=- nevermind-  no one will show up.

barelynangel -> RE: House Warming Party... (2/24/2010 5:55:21 PM)

Hey Nika, It really is just having fun with friends and showing off your new home. The less stress you put into it, the better it will be for all around.

Just use your imagination and have fun!

Guess one of the mods took down my post
(I was wondering how long it would take)
Guess suggesting that some one play russian roulette (misspelled it earlier) is looked upon better then giving some one the recipe for crack cocaine lol

This link has some nice ideas, but i don't quite agree with being completely unpacked. i think so long as anything unpacked is neatly stored, you'd be fine. [:)]

My friends have a bet going on how long it will take me to unpack and put stuff in order in the new place b/c I am OCD about clutter and stuff being put in its place.Lol
