This is actually a spin-off from another thread.

What is your opinion regarding Quebec?

What forces have driven it to be the way it is, and where do you see it going from here?

I won't pretend to be at all knowledgeable about Canadian politics.

I did find it interesting, though, that while Elijah Harper was a key player in rejecting the Meech Lake Accord over its failure to include First Nations, this in Canada still seems to be addressed as a French/English matter.

I also, frankly, have never understood Quebec's position. Seems to me independence sounds great but is incredibly impractical given they would still have to exist on the Earth.

Perhaps they can have devolution like the Scottish, I'm all for local government as long as they get things done for local people rather than becoming another layer of indirect representation.

People should not care about ego driven types of question such as: What country do I belong to? What is my history in this nation? All they should care about is what power they have to be heard by their government and if laws are being made which represent their needs and desires. This is the only thing that affects their lives, all the rest is patriotic fluff. Believe me there are always those that use the sense of national pride as a platform to give themselves cushy political jobs.

People like me don't care if they separate anymore as it's unlikely it will make any difference. It is unlikely if they leave people's lives will change in any meaningful way.

One good thing that will happen for the people of Ontario is that they won't have to make any transfer payments to Quebec anymore, which Ontario has been doing for decades.

Courting Ontario/Shafting Quebec?
Some observers interpreted this as a shot across Ontario's bow; that is, as a signal not to expect to receive equalization payments from Ottawa. In fact, as the largest recipient of equalization dollars, it's Quebec that has most reason to be concerned. Moreover, in light of the election results, Stephen Harper's Conservatives may now see their future fortunes tied to Ontario, and not to Quebec.

Yesterday, Mr. Flaherty indicated that Ontario would not be displeased by the news he would be imparting today. And the Toronto Star reports today, “Because the McGuinty government has contended for years that equalization contributes to the unequal treatment of Ontarians, the provincial Liberals are not against the cap that Flaherty is proposing.” The key, according to the same report, lies in the type of assistance that Ottawa is prepared to provide Ontario, with greater equity for the province in Employment Insurance being an obvious example.

You are wrong Brain,Quebec's departure would be the effective end of Canada as a country. Canada's main port of entry for Atlantic trade is Montreal and it would be disastrous for us if that port were in a separate country. The Maritimes would be cut off from the rest of the country and they could not survive on their own and would likely be absorbed by the US in some form or another. BC & the west would become far more important given the fact that Vancouver would be our only reliable warm water port, leading naturally to a decrease in the economy of Ontario...and Ontario is the engine that drives Canada. Quebec's separation would lead to what is left of Canada becoming even more of an American satellite.
For Quebec, separation would be even harsher, they would not only lose the transfer payments, but they would have to deal with the US on their own...and expecting the Yanks to give two shits about French language rights is simply ludicrous. They would loose much of their favoured nation trading status, as those deals were made with Canada, and Quebec simply does not have the economic muscle to warrant such status.
Put simply, anybody who dismisses the danger that separation presents is either misguided or stupid...the same goes to anybody who supports separation.

OK, I will speak on behalf of all Americans.

First, we have never heard of this Quebec you speak of. But we are quite sure our uncle traveled there in WWII and saw half nekkid wimmen running around in grass skirts. So that kinda makes it sound cool.

But no one has like, ever heard of a Quebec restaurant- like no one ever says, "Dudes, we should totally order in some Quebec tonight!" So that makes it sound kinda sucky.

I'm in New York.

We get hydropower from Quebec.

That's about all I know--which is more than most New Yorkers do!

I'm from the West Coast, but I know enough to have an opinion :)
Quebec has a fairly distinct culture, it's own language, and a different history and traditions. If they resent being Canadian, I say let them be their own country. Canada is too big (population wise, as well as geographically) anyway. I don't see the use in, and in fact see a lot of drawbacks to, forcing countries to stay together when regions within them are very different and don't want to be lumped together. I'd be pleased to see BC split off from Canada, possibly with part of Alberta, or even some of Washington state or Alaska. I think countries should be based on things like lifestyle, culture, languages, industry, and so forth, rather than straight lines on maps. But I've been known to have some fairly "out there" ideas, so don't listen to me.

ah yes..les belles filles, one of the many great things Quebec has given Canada. Any place that produced The Rocket & Leonard Cohen is OK by me.
Seriously though, Quebec is quintessentially Canadian, it is one of the three societies upon which our nation was founded. Ontario is the engine of Canada, the Prairies its breadbasket, but Quebec is the soul of Canada. It is to a large degree what distinguishes our country from all others.

Canada...a solution looking for a problem.
