I would second the opinion that like a woman, every man would do well to find his own unique look.  While a 19 year old boy may look tantalizing with his ass hanging out of his pants ( while I find it ridiculous, I admit that I kind of enjoy it, particularly when they bend over at the bowling alley) or with painted on jeans and an emo haircut, a 40 year old may not.  Listen to Lance.  The world would be a better place for women if every straight man had a gay male friend advising him on fashion. I consistently find my gay male friends more attractive to look at than my straight ones.  What bugs me about straight guys is that often (not always) they don't really seem to give their appearance much thought.  I despise the polo shirt and dockers look which is probably worn to a guy's boring job, particularly when its in unflattering colors.
The kind of straight boy who catches my eye is the one who has spent enough time in front of a mirror to develop a sense of which colors, cuts and styles flatter him and express what he is about. He often has an accessory or two on his person that give me a subtle clue about his personality and interests. Maybe its a smokin' black leather jacket  worn over the standard t-shirt and jeans, maybe its a jaunty little hat that says "tortured artist", maybe its a touchable Aran sweater to compliment his Celtic looks, or a streak of unnatural color in his hair or a well placed facial piercing(depending on whether or not he can pull it off gracefully),maybe its the string of a pink thong poking out of his gym shorts (jk, but you get the idea). Its not that I like vanity so much that it is a compliment when a guy puts as much effort into his appearance as I have.  It says something about his ability to not be apathetic and unimaginative. It says that he cares what I think. So thank you, OP, for caring what we think !
And lastly, because there is no point dressing up something that isn't well well taken care of ( I was going to say "shining shit", but thought it rude), I wish more men would cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize, use masques and trim unruly eyebrow, nose and ear hair.  I'm serious.  My gay friends do, and they look younger, cleaner and just better in general.

I forgot to add that particularly for men, because they do not have the added crutch of makeup in most cases, a good haircut is crucial.  Study what flatters your face shape, and if you can afford it, find a good salon and stylist.

I love a man who dresses his age, and who can dress appropriately for the occasion. Nicely fitting jeans, a button up top (with an undershirt) in a complimentary green or blue, and nice socks with NO HOLES. For casual times, good T-shirts on a man can really make a difference. So nothing with "Jurassic Park" or "BC Lions", or any other faded, lame, or unreadable logo, please.

sidenote: I've recently acquired a distaste for ugly-assed sweaters, but I think that's totally an individual thing.

Loving this thread!

ETA: i love men's shoes, and pay a LOT of attention to them. Being naked on the floor next to a really awesome pair of masculine shoes......yummy.

Victorian/Steampunk menswear; nice, well-tailored suits with crisp french cuffs and cufflinks (but NOT with vests!!!); and tuxedos (cummerbunds, please, not vests). Well-kept, properly shined shoes.

Oh yes, lets NOT forget shoes. I pay a lot of attention to what shoes a man are wearing, it's the 2nd thing I usually "check out" on a man. Oxfords, black leather, shiny, yes! Even the running shoes have to be in good condition and not out of date.

Playfulness aside (although I still maintain that Georgian-era clothing is hella sexy); I think the best thing a man can dress in is what makes him feel comfortable. If you start dressing in ways that don't make you feel comfortable just to impress a lady, it will show.

I feel most comfortable in a pair of loose-fitting jeans and a t-shirt. Sometimes my jeans drag a bit and get scuffed. I often wear baggy hoodies or sweaters. My converse are old and have obvious signs of wear and tear. Honestly, if a woman is going to judge me based on my clothes and not on, you know... factors that actually matter, then she's probably not the kind of women I'd want to impress anyway.

Personal style matters. Even among gym-buffed (but not Mr. America types!), I like the looks of a man in a long Norman (that's 12th century, y'all) tunic over boots with a long-tabbed belt every bit as much as I like a good silk shirt or polo tucked into chinos. Frock coats over 18th century breeches looks damn good, but then so does a Prince Edward and jabot over a well-fitted kilt. And I've seen some damn sexy guys around KinkFest wearing a tank top and Utilikilt (anything but camo). Leather Utilikilts are fun, but so are plain ol' denim or drill.

I really dislike the King Henry VIII look beyond his second decade, too much of the style was intended to camouflage or maybe emphasize his infinitely expanding waistline. (Not to mention his sixth toe.) Ditto Louis XIV in France, but then he is responsible for dragging high heels into "modern" fashion (the pint-sized creep), and I hold that fact against him. Italian shoe designers reflect the Catholic churches stance on women as second-class at best (just like the Chinese bound feet on women, they're crippling and as ruinous to one's health, back, etc. as the Victorian corset was to one's innards). Damn, why won't any of these kinky boot designers do FLAT HEELS?!!!

But back on topic, I'm watching one of my subs develop into his own style now he's dropped the extra 70 pounds from his 6'6 1/2" frame, and damn, he looks really fine in pinstriped slacks with a simple collared shirt tucked under the belt. Now if I can only get the boy to start experimenting with color—he'll look really great with a crimson or forest or sapphire shirt paired with those black and charcoal slacks, or even just a tee on weekends.

It's always better to over dress and wish you hadn't than under dress and wish you had. For men that is. I'm a firm believer in good quality shoes, I think they are one of the best investments you can make. When properly cared for they last a lifetime. It is also my opinion that gentlemen wear hats when outdoors.

I really love a suit. I find them very sexy. But it's not so much the type of article (loose or tight) or a particular style that I like or don't like. I like to see a man with a sense of style (most just don't have that) It's very sexy to see a man who knows how to dress and isn't afraid to be a bit fashionable.

Lance - Snopes can say what it wants, but I work in the prison system. While the clothes don't fit all that well, they don't have to fit THAT badly either. They choose to wear saggy, way too big clothes for a reason. From my experience, the whole "the clothes sag because they don't fit and no one can wear belts in prison" just doesn't hold up (yes, mild pun is intended).
