a "rift"? learn English, buddy.

And whatever you think it was, it still makes no sense.

Think about it for a while. Look at a map. It will come to you.

Musicmystery -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (2/28/2010 8:16:59 PM)

The new thread, about purple states, has maps that nicely show the county by county trends within states.

juliaoceania -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (2/28/2010 8:44:35 PM)

Yes, most of those on the receiving end of govt. aid are red states, or as I like to call them, welfare states...

I suggest that we cut spending in their states first.... waddaya all think?

Musicmystery -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (2/28/2010 9:22:32 PM)

Here's the thing---

16 of the 17 states that pay more than they get, all except Texas, were blue states in the 2008 election. They are the ones I can understand complaining, but they aren't.

33 states---2/3 of the states!--BENEFIT from the "big government" "tax and spend" policies, and yet they're the red states screaming against it. If they succeeded in killing it, they'd immediately have less money.

Are they just nuts? Ignorant? Just repeating what their leaders tell them to say?

They are voting against their own self-interest.

juliaoceania -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (2/28/2010 9:42:05 PM)

I have known for quite a while about this.. it is something Sinergy and I have puzzled over many times...

They would be the first to feel it if we quit redistributing the wealth from the states and let the states administer their own programs... not the blue states... we would have more money to pay for our socialist agenda[:D]

Musicmystery -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (2/28/2010 10:54:28 PM)

Ronald Reagan told them government was the problem, and they thought it sounded good--all while he ran up the deficit, unable to pay for his agenda.

Yeah, give 'em their freedom. My state could certainly use the money here!

juliaoceania -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 7:02:00 AM)

I notice none of them are posting on this thread... I wonder why[:D]

Musicmystery -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 9:27:45 AM)

Yeah, I've noticed that too, and in similar past threads.

People want to argue, not look at reality.

And cling to cherished delusions.

luckydawg -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 12:29:50 PM)

I can only comment about Alaska (where I used to live). The analysis is not valid. To start only 10% of what you see on a map is actually "the State of Alaska". Most of the land mass is Federal land, either parks or Millitary bases. And yeah the feds pay to maintain thier parks and Millitary bases, which the people in Alaska get no more say over than people in Mass or New York. Also the federal government has treaty and trust obligations to the Alaska Natives. Which the Feds pay for, and the State of Ak gets virtually no say over. The majority of the coast line in the USA is Guess where? Alaska. Hence the feds pay for the Coast Guard. The Artic is at the forefront of climate change (as we are told over and over) so studies about it are done where? In the arctic (Alaska).

Now a lot of people in Alaska want the feds to give them more controll over the use of the land there. And the Republicans generally agree. And the dems often seem to want to turn the entire state into a park. Consider the ANWR issue. Way more in jobs and revenue would come in for the people of Alaska. So I don't see the voting against thier own interest (though I do understand that is a talking point regurgitated over and over by the dems, it was in a book 15 or so years ago).

By, " cling to cherished delusions", do you mean pretending that the blue areas subsidise the red areas, as you and Julia seem to be doing? The article you cite clearly shows that with a simplistic glance that seems to be the case, yet it isn't true. The amount of Military bases is the largest factor. Also it is the Red areas that drive the blue states economically.

Also New Mexico the highest offender in the list is a solid blue state....

juliaoceania -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 12:36:05 PM)

California has many National Parks and has a huge coast

Your excuses do not wash here... we also have military bases...

edited to add... how are red states driving our economy here?

luckydawg -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 12:46:41 PM)

So simplistic, and dull. There are indeed millitary bases and parks in every state. It would be the porportinal size that matters. Also Population density matters. If you have 25 taxpayers living outside a base as opposed to 25,000, to use some silly made up numbers it affects the average. The base is still there because the Feds decided it was needed.

No state come even close to being around 85% owned by the feds, except Alaska.

If you want to dispute the findings of the Study in the OP, take it up with the authors or MM (I assume he considers it valid since he posted it).
"States with large military or Federal labs (typically in the South and West) appear to get more in Federal dollars."

And a blue state is at the top of the list.

luckydawg -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 12:51:11 PM)

and compared to Alaska California has a tiny coast.

No where did I say that the red states drive the California economy. I noted the fact stated in the Article that the red AREAS, do. The whole switching what was said so you can argue against it is just lame. Its what realone does

Though where exactly do you think California sells it's products? Where are the goods coming through your ports going?

No there are not, there are many states that have no national parks or military bases...

California National Parks (BTW, ours actually have personnel at them and must be maintained because they are actually USED)

California military bases... I think we might have more than any other state

Look at how many coast guard stations and personnel by state, not the freaking size of the coast... geesh

Oh yeah... ever hear of the fucking port of LA?,... you really should pick up a geography book

They go over land through NY and they go to China from the LA... and other destinations. I doubt much goes through Alaska

juliaoceania -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 1:10:40 PM)

I should not be so snarky... I apologize... I am not feeling well today

luckydawg -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 1:22:38 PM)

"fucking port of LA" gets no direct hits on google.

And I already asked you , where does the cargo coming in to the Port of LA (or longbeach) go? Much of it goes to "red states". The people there pay for the goods, ie they help subsidise the port.

Why should I pick up a Geography book? You should read the OP if you want to dispute the link to millitary bases.

No... there is some that goes out, and there is some that goes into red states... but the vast majority of that cargo goes THROUGH red states... no one lives in red states for them to contribute to our economy significantly...

And they are lucky we can't charge them a tariff[:D]

I am pointing out that you are stating that Alaska gets a free pass because of all the military and national park spending...

California still pays into the kitty and has all the same Federal tax inputs as alaska

luckydawg -> RE: 33 states get more Fed tax $ than they pay in. (3/1/2010 1:31:25 PM)

Sorry you are not feeling well, lets not get snarky.

Stuff from China gets unloaded on the West coast(probably in Seattle, though that is a guess), and then loaded on a different boat up to Alaska. But the reason you have huge ports is to service the interior of the country (the "Red States").

Again if you have 10,000 local taxpayers per coast guard base(or park, millitary base, or federal research facility) compared to 1,000,000 local taxpayers. It makes the averages look wierd. Do you not get that?

And Again!!! I am not asserting that Millitary bases are the factor. The cited article in the OP does.
