Interesting point. I feel that the very act of letting your self be written on and labeled is degrading to begin with. The idea that a sub's body and skin are no better than an artist's canvas or a writer's paper has to be clear in her mind. Some things I would never write (unless specifically asked) such as "rape me" on a sub. But I think that fat, ugly, stupid are all fair game if it describes the sub accurately. I wouldn't write "fat stupid whore" on a thin intelligent sub (if any actually existed) just to insult her. The truer the statements, the more humiliating it is.
That is not to say there isn't a balance between degrading and erotic embarasment as you bring up... but I don't think the line is as clear as you believe.
