How does a Mistress go by figuring out how a sub/slave limits are reached even though that particular sub/slave calls a safe word but wants to continue after resting.

I simply use two safewords.  One to say stop for a bit we need to talk before continuing and another to stop everything with no chance to continue.

Same! And btw, 'stop' is a lousy safeword, since just like the 'Cheers' episode, it can sound too much like 'Don't stop!'

If a sub uses the safe word or signal the Dominant should be asking them whats going on to determine if they're ok. During that process it should be apparent what course should be taken. As Lockit said, communication.

on the sub end of this..

if I need a break, I ask for a break. If the ropes too tight, I say the ropes too tight. If I want the seen to end, then I use my safeword..

when playing with "nilla" friends who are "in the know" I tend to use my safe word to mean "give me a minute.. I've had enough of this activiy"
