In my urban neighborhood there are 2 post offices and 2 more PO box locations within walking distance. Surely some of that can be consolidated.

Lucylastic -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 5:29:25 PM)

Oh I love it, dumbass people wanting to cut USPS. As I send 80 % of my parcels to the US from Canada, and using fed ex or UPS would increase the shipping cost to 30 or 40 $ for my customer and then some. Try ordering anything  online and see your costs double. Also no body would order anything from outside the USA because Fed UP and UCKs charge dutys and fees and broker fees which can double the cost of the item. Eg I ordered 100 $ worth of beading supplies from the US..Fed ex got it there in five days, to pay for the privilege I had to pay 84$ extra fees for shipping, customs a broker feee and a line fee for each item.

I will never get anything via ups or fed ex again, even within canada, my customers dont like it , I dont like it, canada post and usps might be slow and fraught with issues, but they still provide a service that isnt competition driven...you dont see prices coming down, only up...more money in their shareholders and bubkiss and inconvenience for customers. In and outside the USA.

I have one office in Omaha that handles my mail, one in Cookville where we buy our stamps and mail off packages and one in Mount Pleasant that serves the city.  My brother works for the one in Pittsburgh one county over.

servantforuse -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 5:50:25 PM)

There are probably thousands of small post office locations that could and should be closed. That is the first thing that should be looked at. If the P O were run as a business this would have been done already.

Musicmystery -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:15:23 PM)

Businesses don't have to go to Congress first.

And Congress will never run as a business--too much is done for effect, not for effectiveness.

servantforuse -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:21:10 PM)

Thats the problem Music, the government couldn't run a lemonade stand without losing money. Let the private sector make some cost saving decisions or at the least untie the hands of those running the P O.

willbeurdaddy -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:23:46 PM)

The solution is obvious. Nationalize the private mail box drop companies adding 30 million PO boxes to the system. Force those who currently use them to continue to pay for them but add a tax on the bigger boxes unless they are used exclusively by labor unions. Companies that don't subsidize postage for their employees will also pay a tax, but one that is far less than the cost of postage. Cut the pay of mail carriers by 21%.

This will obviously lower the cost of mail delivery and increase delivery speed for everyone.

And that's your problem--you confuse services with business endeavors. The important factor is the service, rather than maximizing revenue.

Just the same, solutions are in the works.

servantforuse -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:29:44 PM)

Why can't they give good service and still run it as a business ?

Musicmystery -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:31:12 PM)

To every little rural place all across the country? At low, readily affordable prices?

No business would take that on.

Hence the service.

Right!

Because there are no corporate bureaucracies that run inefficiently.

We'll just turn everything over to the private sector and all will be well, the sun will shine, the flowers will bloom and peace and prosperity will reign across the land.

oh theres a smart idea[8|] you want less government intervention, but you wanna force people to pay more, and force people to lose 21 % of their earnings... you are such a freaking plonker

servantforuse -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:38:10 PM)

AT&T was always very profitable company and still is. They made their money in the large cities and LD calls. They lost big money providing service to rural areas but still made a profit doing so. They did so for years being a regulated monopoly not being able to raise rates whenever they wanted to do so.

kdsub -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:39:48 PM)

I'm just wondering...why cut Saturdays and raise rates across the board... Why not just double the charge to deliver junk mail... I could do with a lot less and maybe the increase in charges would keep the mail service solvent.

and you need a new fucking sarcasm detector. You also might want to compare it to the health care bill.

Musicmystery -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:44:44 PM)

As are all natural monopolies, because the economies of scale are such that even one company is mathematically too many to be competitive---in this case the cost of lines.

When AT&T was forced apart---rates rose. Competition was not the answer in this instance--the nature of a natural monopoly.

To be fair, it did invite innovation--fiber optics in particular. But service is far worse than it was, and far more complicated--now I have what, four phone bills instead of one, all of them charging minimum fees per bill for even one call.

But Bell Labs certainly produced its share of innovations too.

servantforuse -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:49:25 PM)

I just think that with congress out of the picture, and the right people running the Post Office, you could have good service to all parts of the country without losing a couple of billion dollars every year.

thornhappy -> RE: Govt Mailcare Insolvent: Cut Saturdays? (3/3/2010 6:57:16 PM)

My parents live in rural NW Ohio.  There's a small town (300 or so people) PO about 3 miles away.  The next one over is in Bowling Green (about 12 miles away).  Their mail is delivered by a rural carrier (uses a personal vehicle).

Going UPS means going into (somewhere) in Bowling Green, no fun in the winter considering the township roads aren't in the best of shape (drift quickly and plowed infrequently).  The small town PO is a better bet for that.  They also do all their bill pay via paper (my parents don't trust the net for that) but wouldn't mind missing a Saturday delivery.

As for putting the branches in stores...some very rural places have very small operations within stores, but you'd have a hell of a time putting a sizeable operation within a store - if nothing else for security reasons.

I hope your grandsons birthday doesn't fall on a Saturday. He'll have to wait until Monday for his card. I hope Monday isn't a federal holiday. He'll have to wait until Tuesday for his card.

Or they could use a little common sense and mail it in time to get there friday.
