SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Mike Welliver pleaded not guilty Thursday on a charge of felonious assault, after he allegedly used a pocket knife to carve his name into his girlfriend's chest.

A Clark County judge set Welliver's bond at $100,000.

Police said he used a pocket knife to carve his name into the woman's chest on the morning of February 19th. Lt. Jim Hutchins said, "They did find that he had carved, 'I luv Mike Welliver,' carved in with a heart."

However Mike Welliver, 31, told News Center 7 that there is much more to the story.

In a jailhouse interview on Wednesday night, Welliver admitted to the chest carving, but said he should not be found guilty of assaulting the woman. He said a lot of what happened was fueled by stupidity and cocaine. "Now that I look at i, sitting here right now, if somebody asked me, I wouldn't do it," said Welliver. "That's the whole part of this.... is cocaine. We were high out of our mings and things went crazy."

Welliver said it was so crazy that he ended up with letters on his own chest. "I said no, stop. All she was doing was digging."

His now former girlfriend ended up with the words "I luv Mike Welliver" cut into her chest. "After I did just the Mike part I was like, you know, do you want me to stop? She was like No. She was fine with it," said Welliver.

Welliver claimed things went downhill in the hours and days after that. Police arrested him on an unrelated warrant and his ex-girlfriend reported the chest carving incident to Springfield police. He said the woman told officers that he had threatened her with a meat cleaver. "I did not threaten to cut anything on her in any violent way," said Welliver.

He did admit to owning a meat cleaver and keeping it in the home he shares with his mother. ""If I heard my Mom scream, that's what I'm coming downstairs with. You ain't got to be very accurate with it. You just got to swing."

Welliver also said he took cell phone pictures of the incident with his former girlfriend but never hit her with the cell phone. He said he is guilty of bad judgement, but feels that should not land him behind bars. He said the carving was consensual.

Welliver said, "I didn't do this like it's been told. I'm not a bad person. I'm not crazy. I don't deserve to go to prison over this."

Police said he cut the words into the victim's chest after the two started talking about her tattoo. "Mr. Welliver stated that he didn't like the tattoo and said that she should have it removed," said Lt. Hutchins.

The victim said Welliver grabbed a meat cleaver from under his bed and offered to remove her tattoo using it.

Police said Welliver gave the victim two options: let him remove the tattoo or let him cut something into her chest. Lt. Hutchins said, "With his size and the meat cleaver she felt threatened so she didn't fight much for it."

The woman was able to escape, but she refused treatment for her injuries.

Officers said the two were still seeing each other when the cutting occurred, but the victim broke off the relationship after the incident.

I'd be pretty pissed if I 'came to' and had any shit marked in my skin. I don't even have a tattoo. But this is why we should say NO to drugs, boys and girls.

“fueled by stupidity and cocaine”.

Poor kid is one of a million that has carved his mark on a girl with a knife. I am glad none of my dumb shit ended up in the paper long ago when I was in a band and was frequently fueled by stupidity and cocaine. The list would be so long, they would have to print a supplementary edition.
