as a beginner I have to say. Nylon nylon nylon. it's cheap, tough, washable, easy to work with, you can cut it with heat and not have to worry about fraying, it doesn't burn, it holds knots fairly well (although there are some you won't be able to use because it is a little slippery), and it's cheap. use between 1/4" and 1/2" for most applications. you can use a little thinner if you get in to genital bondage or breast bondage, but be careful about that. check ever few minute to make sure tied up bits aren't getting cold. cold = possible lack of circulation = very bad. make sure you use knots that don't tighten under tension, eg. slipknots = bad. twisted nylon feels nicer on the skin and can leave nice marks. braided nylon is a touch slipperier and smoother, so you don't have to worry about rope burn as much when untying. pretty much the only thing that makes nylon break down is heat and direct sunlight, so you don't have to worry about damp and mildew and rot.
if you look you can even get it in black sometimes. and you'll want a surprisingly large amount because it'll get used pretty fast. knots eat up rope length. so I'd suggest a 50 or 100' package of nylon, probably 3/8". as a bonus they usually come with a little pamphlet of common knots. if you get 50', cut it into 4 equal lengths, that's about the right size to tie someone spread eagle or something. if 100 get 4 10-15 length pieces and probably keep the rest intact, some of the column ties (eg arm to leg or calf to thigh or forearm to upper arm) need a fairly large length. and the easiest way to cut nylon is with a pair of scissors or something, then use a match, candle, or lighter to melt the end. this prevents fraying. it's a good idea but not necessary to try to smooth the hard plastic edges of that end.
oh, and wrap what you're tying in multiple layers of rope to help with circulation. like ////// not //. and don't overlap them because that makes pressure points.
and don't leave someone in bondage unattended. and never tie the head or neck to something that might have to support weight. eg. collar to wrist cuffs yes. collar to ground yes. collar to wall probably not. if they pass out the weight of their body can break their neck (unlikely but possible) or strangle. and pretty much rope never goes around neck because it's really easy to cut off circulation there and that = bad things. hope that answers your questions.

and seriously everyone? he's not asking for good karada rope or shibari rope because when you get into that level of skill I'll grant that hemp or jute might be a worthwhile investment. he just wanted a good tip for entry level bondage rope. so rope handcuffs, maybe a column tie, not harness or suspension.

Absolutely. And nylon is definately strong enough for most purposes, even at smaller diameters, so it is not a bad choice. The only disadvantage from a beginners point of view is that with nylon, your knots actually need to be better knot than with hemp.
