I'm so sorry. I do not know a vet to help, but I will tell you what they did for my girl. She was diagnosed with it at 12 years old.. after a one AM trip to the animal emergency room and a huuuuge bill. They put her on Tagamet to help  with uremic ulcers after they stabilized her. Before we left, they told us we had less that six months left with her. We followed up with our regular vet. I asked how long to keep her on the Tagamet. He thought for a moment and then his face lit up. He said forever. He explained that a side effect of Tagamet in cats was increased kidney function. We had to cut up the pills into 8ths and give her one morning and evening. It worked. Our six month cat lived an extra six years, passing away Christmas Eve of 2003. Over that six years we had to have her infused only a handful of times (four or five.) We've shared this with several friends in the past and each has had it help, though none got as long with it as we did with Silver. It's a pain in the ass to cut up the Tagamet (the damned things aren't flat!) but.. as you already know, it's worth some hassle to make their lives better. Good luck with your fuzz!

OH.. also, one of the tricks to get them to take in more water? Buy a large can of tuna in water. You eat the tuna and the cat gets the water. They sell fish flavored water, but Silver refused it. She'd only drink the "real" stuff.

camille65 -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/18/2010 9:48:07 AM)

I give AncientKitty (she is over 22 years old) mackeral juice from canned mackeral, I also make a watered down mackeral paste using the nasty fish after giving her the juice. It is less expensive than tuna. Since doing that her liquid intake has greatly increased.

Alpha, I hope your George responds well and I am sure that he is fully aware of your love for him.

mnottertail -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/18/2010 9:49:29 AM)

wouldnt that say that you could lightly poach some good cheap oily fish in water and feed her that water?

I wish there was more I could offer, but my kitty knowledge ends long before administering needles of anything.  I will echo what BoiJen said though that, as hard as it is, I hope you can keep in mind what is best for George in all this.  I had to put an animal down last winter and I know it was the hardest decision I never want to have to make again.  I wanted there to be hope so bad and all I was doing was prolonging his excruciating suffering.  I can't say I'm okay with letting him go, but I know my motives were selfish in keeping him here.  I hope your boy isn't to that point yet, but I will pray for you the wisdom to know when it is time to let go.  My best wishes in your search and learning and also my deepest sympathies.  I know it isn't easy.

My buddy had plural effusion from a mass around his heart. One day he just couldn't breathe and they tapped his chest...even with lasix, one week later they had to tap his chest again. He wouldn't eat and I had to fight to feed him. Broke my heart so badly that Ma'am had to take over feeding him cuz he would cry. He was just over one year old when we put him down.

I know it's not the same thing....and it's REALLY hard and I kept thinking about how I would feel if I couldn't communicate to my family and the people that I love about this kinda thing.

So yeah it sucks if that's what has to be done, but by no means is this meant to just give up on him. Fight for him as long as he's willing to fight.

In humans with renal failure you can't give too many fluids or they end up in congestive heart failure. Infact towards the end of their kidney life, fluids are restricted.

I had a healthy young cat with renal failure, and we had special food for him. He eventually started having seizures and after several weeks of vet visits and bills, he eventually went into status epilepticus where his seizures just didn't end - so I had to have him put to sleep. My kids and I cried our eyes out, but he was at peace, and even though I am catholic-ish I believe I shall meet him again.
I loved him very much and still miss him.

I realise this isn't much help for you, but you might consider with your cat at 19 wheither or not you are doing this for him or you, depending on his condition. I had to wait until Rusty was suffering before I could end his life.

LafayetteLady -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/18/2010 6:23:21 PM)

I'm really sorry your George is suffering. As some here know, I freaked when my Socks snuck out for 3 days right before New Year's not knowing what I would do without her, and she has only been with me a year. I have always loved all my pets, but Socks is just....special, so I know how difficult this must be for you.

I hate to be a pessimist, but I do have to agree with kiwisub and some others who have suggested really considering George's best interest and his quality of life in all this. You could spend a fortune doing everything possible for the poor boy and it will give you some more time with him, but will it be GOOD time for him?

Years ago, I had a friend who had a hybrid wolf, Sakota. She developed Hemacratic Anemia and my friend wanted to do everything she could to prolong her dog's life. She took out a personal loan, they removed Sakota's pancreas and she did live a while longer. But she wasn't the same animal anymore. She went from being a strong, vibrant animal to moping around and looking as though she wished she were dead already.

It isn't fair to our pets to keep doing things to keep them alive for us. I really would ask the vet about the Tagamet Beach Mystress suggested, but also really have a thorough discussion with your vet about how GEORGE might be feeling physically when making your decisions.

Good luck.

I am so sorry, VAA. There isn't much I can offer from up here except my sympathy and my prayers but I hope everything works out for the best. It's always heart-rending when something like this happens and you always feel helpless and responsible. I've been there myself and it's a tough deal. Kudos to you for trying everything you can to help George - you've got a good heart.

I Honestly hope this forum comes up trumps here for you Alpha, even if it comes from behind the scenes. We never stop learning about how hard things can be for others. If I can't afford to contribute any other way ... will I get in trouble for "bumping" this thread ?  We can at least do that ...

Vid, I do think it helps to talk about these things!
After all, all of us pet owners are in the same boat!
I have a big tabby tomcat "Bubba" and when he goes I know I'm going to miss the hell out of him!
He snuggles up in bed with me and grabs my finger in his paws!

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/22/2010 9:16:58 AM)

I had a vet lined up for her in a nearby town, but she hasn't answered my e-mails either. Based on an  earlier post in the thread, I'm assuming she's found the resources she needed locally, and she's just really busy taking care of the cat.

Again, to those I have not written to, suffice it to say it is not because I do not want to, and still have the emails there to read and respond to....it's horrible when one has to decide which is the greater evil to deal with at the moment, please have patience with me.

takemeforyourown -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/25/2010 9:11:30 PM)

This makes me sad, I'm sorry for you and kitty!

Phoenixpower -> RE: If there is a member out there that can help me, I would be so grateful (3/26/2010 10:03:42 AM)

I am so sorry to hear about the health problem from George, Alpha....and wish I would be able to give advice...but can't [&o]

As some already said, despite all the love we have for our furrys...don't forget what is best for George.

My mum had a cat in 2005 I think it was, who was diagnosed with cat leukemia...and despite the fact that the vet was astonished that she was still alive due to the fact how many or how little red or white bloodcells she had (one of them was far too many or far too few) my mum disagreed to let her go to sleep and instead took her home again, saying that she could not do it as "when she was looking in her face she appeared as being SO WELL..."
... however about 3 days later then she was run over by a car from a friend from my parents, as she lied in front of his wheel which he had not realised...

And therefore I felt right during that time that even when it was hard (as it always is) it would have been better to listen to the vet in regards to the test results and that she should not have been dragged through any longer and wish she would have been able to fall asleep peacefully instead of being run over by a friends car...

I hope you find help for George...

apart from that...can you please send Curry and Pepper back home? yeah? Because that ginger one and that tortie one are mine and I have no idea what they are doing on YOUR bed [>:][>:][>:]

best wishes [:o]
