Sorry, I just had to jumpthrough. Why not just settle this the quick way. Set a filesize limit, because after all that is what this is all about. Though content and relevance matter in some cases, some people do not have the fastest of internet connections, this place gets a hell of alot of users at a time and that can bottleneck the other end.

At any rate, about 150KB JPG should get you a decent resolution picture even fullscreen. At the highest quality and compression levels it starts to depend on the processor of the recieving end. I have had good highspeed for a while, and when it fed an old celeron with 160MB RAM it could take some time for the browser to parse the pages.

Now it's no problem and it loads quickly but who's to say it works like that for everyone.

Some parts of our software is "out of the box", and some is customizable.  Frankly I do not know if that part is customizable or not.

Generally, websites do not expend programming hours and resources on things that are only problematic for one person.

If rules exist, they must be applicable to all, and written in such a manner that they are understandable to all.. If this criteria is not met, the rules become nothing more than a disclaimer to trap the unwary and shrug off guilt for others actions.

Fine, I can accept being told off, I can accept the gold bordered messages, but I would for the sake of understanding like to be told where I have failed and how this compares to the rules as they are to be understood, not simply be told I am in breach of TOS, as if I cannot understand, then the possibility exists I might do what it is I have done again, because of failure to understand in the first place, through perception and further perception.

If you don't understand rules as they are written then you don't sign up for something you don't get.  If you do and fuck up, your problem.
If you get something wrong and get it explained to you then it's all cool.  I have seen the OP in this very thread have two different admin and moderators explain things clearly and then the OP get all pissy because everyones being 'hateful'???

People can pretty much tolerate mistakes.  But obtuse stupidity is a lot less groovy on the patience stakes, ya dig?  Besides, the OP posted how many times about this now?  I had a look and I can see at least two threads and shes already said that mods had removed others.  So how many threads have to exist?  Yeah a thread about TOS is cool, but it's not about that, it's about some attention seeking poster with authority issues.

the.dark.

I believe you are not understanding me in what I am saying, anything can be written and written in a way some will understand, perhaps it is thought everyone, but everyone is different and they have their own understanding for what they see, so it stands that if people have their own understanding about what they see, then what is written is not clear to everyone. Chuck in a few learning difficulties and the situation gets worse.

I do get what you are saying and my stance is the same.
Learning difficulties does not make a person stupid.  And stupid people are just stupid, with no excuses.

If I tell 16 to go into 21 five time, it will, because I'm so Domly. I never let numbers push me around.

Tell me: did you used to work for Enron?

I'm sure DarkSteven just has a decent working knowledge of finite field arithmetic.

21/16 = 5 is perfectly true in GF(59)

No domliness required. Just mathematics… and not the sort practiced at Enron.

Somewhat on topic:

Pardon my ignorance, but does it really work this way? Just a general question for the group - I'm not doubting that this is true, but I don't understand how it works. Does it only slow down the users trying to load that particular page, or does it really slow down the entire server? Can someone explain it, because my curiosity is really piqued.

quote:

ORIGINAL: VideoAdminAlpha
It can pull down the speed of anyone doing a search that might involve that particular post, to anywhere that the whole thread or post might be displayed in a list of topics, any thing that might involve anything that requires the server to look search that thread and wind up on that topic, multiplied by the users that might be on that thread, or even looking at that whole category (off topic, general bdsm etc) or doing searches at the same time etc. Then multiply that by the fact another user might be in another area whose functional capability has possibly been slowed in response to the others areas being slowed, and you can see what can happen. It was not to this degree of seriousness at this point, but if continued unchecked it could possibly cause a bigger problem than what was happening.

I don't think this explanation is particularly accurate from a technical perspective. Posts are presumably stored in, and searched from, a database on the server. A search query almost certainly does not actually load a page and all its linked graphical resources just to match a text string, so the performance impact of an image (regardless of size) should be negligible on searches. Similarly, unless some users have aggressive prefetching, simply browsing a board without clicking on a thread is not going produce any additional requests for the the images in that thread. Basically, unless someone is actively loading the page in question, there shouldn't be much more for the server to do. That said, any load on the server from requests for the page will slow down the entire site, not just the page in question. A server is just a computer with finite bandwidth, memory, disk I/O, and processing power; whenever it devotes those resources to a task (like serving a bunch of large, animated GIF images) that comes directly from the pool available for other tasks and users – so a heavy load will affect everything.

If server load from large images has truly been identified as a performance bottleneck, file size limits on uploads really do seem like a useful idea. Implementation is often just a simple setting, not some massive programming task... and it's not that hard to envision similar issues with large images cropping up again every once in a while.

I believe the count was almost 500 and they were animated gifs not jpegs. Bandwidth didn't like it, for whatever reason. It seems to be doing ok now.(again, for whatever reason)

It doesn't seem worth the effort of limiting uploads-we're talking about one poster uploading a whole load of gifs, not loads of posters uploading loads each-a quick word with DS does seem to have solved the problem.

Mods, is the odd animation considered ok? Was it the quantity of gifs that was the problem, or the individual files? (If that question makes aaaaaany sense...)

The abuse of any facility made available to all posters causes the problem.  It would be unfair for all users if the site had to penalize everyone for one or two peoples inability to comply or even compromise with moderators requests based on the TOS.
