Are you saying that a joke can never be in bad taste?

Many Atheist groups held Zombieaster Parties this weekend. Mine did. They dressed as zombies then partied downtown until the wee hours of the morning. I chose not to attend last night as I don't believe that mocking Christians helps our cause. Many members of our local group didn't see it that way. They believed that they were just celebrating their lack of belief, which they have every right to do.

It's a hell of an excuse for thinking--mere reaction and rejection kicks in at age two.

Nor do I see any atheist "cause." Texas is a scary place.

Atheists are just as diverse a group as Christians, and the sentiments I stated above are not exclusive to Texas. As I said, many Atheist groups in most major cities held Zombieaster parties. This has become a tradition of sorts.

As for an atheist "cause", many of us believe the world would be a better place if people were less religious. Count me among that ilk. As a group we differ on how to achieve that goal. I prefer "quiet" activism and education, and others are more "in your face." I think the Zombie parties qualified as the later.

Out of curiosity... how is your belief that the "world would be a better place if people were less religious" coincide with tolerance?

Look all, the title of the thread is "Happy Zombie Jesus Day" for crying out loud. It's obvious that it's not going to be a reverential posting. So to then read the thread and then get offended by it, is simply looking to be offended. Either every subject is okay to poke fun at or no subject is okay, because any joke is bound to offend someone.

So what you are saying is that if i am offended, i should shut up and just take it.

Um... nope... but thank you for playing "lets stifle the voices".

I believe - and history bears me out - that most intolerance in this world is due to the "us versus them" mentality created by differing religious beliefs. "Religious tolerance" is an oxymoron, except for those who only pay lip service to their faith.

I like what the OP did...I'm at a loss as to how anyone could seriously believe a crucified man could come back to life after dying from shock, severe blood loss and asphyxiation. Anyone who believes a person is able to come back to life after going through something like THAT is clearly stupid and uneducated. I'd personally be happy seeing all religious books be classified as fiction.

On a day some consider holy, a thread is started wishing a happy day with a sprinkle of mockery towards those who believe. and you feel this is ok? he has his right to post it. i have my right to voice my objection.

as my mom used to say about clothes... just because they make it in your size doesnt mean you should wear it. this is the same thing. if it had been posted in the Humor section, i could, possibly, see the joke. It was posted in this section, instead. This was not intended as a joke, but a statement against a particular religion.

It should be posted in the humor section if the history of Christianity wasn't so sad.

You know the cause of death because A) you were present at the autopsy back then or B) you are assuming that would be the cause of death.

No one knows, with any scientific proof, what the cause of death was. Therefore, no one knows for sure, with any scientific proof, that JC was even dead when he was placed in that tomb. All anyone of our era has to go on are the written descriptions of what non-medically trained people (my assumption) back in the day thought they saw.

Unless you have scientific proof that JC died per your analysis, your proclamation could equally be classified as coming from someone who is "clearly stupid and uneducated."

Wow. Some interesting images on this thread. Who knew there was so much zombie iconography?

Fortunately, my own image of this Easter Day is a much happier one, that of the crowd that gathered this morning at All Souls Unitarian Church here in D.C. There were, to borrow from the Book of Common Prayer, "all sorts and conditions" of people: adorable kids, lesbian couples, African-American grandes dames, earnest young hetero pairs, gay men of a certain age, slightly worn looking folks just back from building houses in New Orleans, people limping along with the help of a cane, and so on and so forth. I found myself remembering a favorite line from Dickens: "In they all came, one after another; some shyly, some boldly, some gracefully, some awkwardly, some pulling, some pushing; in they all came any how and every how."

And what did they come for? The music, the ritual, the community. The chance to explore (with, being Unitarians, more questions than answers) the possibility that life may be more than material, that there may be deeper realities worth pondering and enduring values worth cultivating. And, on this Easter Day, joy in and hope for renewal, in whatever form that takes.

Seeing all these diverse folks come together to celebrate and hope and touch one another's lives was, for me at least, a powerful image that I shall cherish long after I've forgotten the zombie pictures.

Happy Easter to you all.

Peace,

DC

Another possibility is that emperical knowledge gained from the extensive historical and scientific study of the thousands of crucifictions that occured during that period in history could lead one to say with a great degree of certainty how Jesus died.

There are always exceptions to any empirical data set. When it comes to this one historical figure, relying on extrapolated scientific evidence as to the cause of his death simply isn't good enough to the believers wanting to validate or the non-believers wanting deny the story of JC's death and resurrection. Absolute proof tied to this one man would be needed, perhaps even required, by both sides before much of the discourse can be abated.

I'm not so sure that this discourse isn't now so thoroughly entrenched that even if scientific evidence could be found regarding JC's death that it would be enough to stop all of the war of words or guns.

Quite the opposite, was how I read it. To somebody, somewhere, EVERY joke is in bad taste.

How about if I am offended by the beliefs forced on me as an unbeliever?

1. When being crucified, the nails used are driven through major veins and arteries in the wrists and also the shins. This type of trauma will lead to severe blood loss. Obviously, this type of injury could not be treated in the days of the Roman Republic, especially if you happened to be someone condemned to this form of punishment.
2. After suffering above named type of trauma, a person will go into acute shock from suffering this injury and the resulting blood loss.
3. From how a person was crucified, breathing becomes difficult. With the way the body was positioned, the chest muscles and diaphagram could not be allowed to fully expand. An individual in this position would have to lift their body up in order to allow more air into the lungs. Such a task done continously would drain a person just through the pain alone. Once exhausted and unable to lift oneself up any more, breathing becomes an impossible task. Death by asphyxiation will eventually occur.

He has faith in his belief.

Isn't that what this whole argument is about?

sweetboundesire -> RE: Happy Zombie Jesus Day (4/4/2010 1:02:49 PM)

How did JC do it you ask? Easy- JC was an alien. He clearly was beamed up back to the mutha ship af the end of his fabled life.

I keep forgetting its easter but thank god the easter bunny remembered to hide a basket in the house last night. JC says he will come again yet the easter bunny comes and comes again!! That hoppy little fucker never let's me down! Amen! Praises be:)

I have no problem with any of this. What you have written is the expected behavior of the human body when subjected to such physical stress. However, since we do not have actual proof that JC died from these injuries, we cannot make a 100% accurate, indisputable claim that he did. The best we can do is, through our faith in either the scientific process of how a crucifixion works or our faith in the accuracy of the various accounts of the resurrection story is assume that he did die in this manner.

Was JC in fact dead when he was taken down from the crucifix, or was he just in a medical coma? Would those of that era know the difference between death and a coma? Is the written reports of JC's crucifixion accurate or are they written through the filter of the author's intense emotions witnessing the scene?

Who knows? All we can do is make assumptions and act accordingly, for better or for worse. With regards to this one historical figure, it's all a matter of faith; you cannot get any more accurate than that.

I am trying to remember when Music ever said it was ok to depict Mubammad with a timebomb turban. I must have missed that post.

Depends there sappatoti, the book says he died.  So if you follow the book you would have to take as truth the fact that he died and arose.
