Vendaval -> Auschwitz hero Denis Avey in line for Israeli honour" (4/4/2010 11:44:20 PM)

There is a great story in the press right now about a British soldier who twice traded places with a Jewish prisoner in the segregated part of the camp at Auschwitz III. A gift of extra cigarettes helped the other man survive, read on to find out more.

Auschwitz hero Denis Avey in line for Israeli honour

By Rob Broomby
BBC News

"A former British prisoner of war who helped a Jewish inmate survive Auschwitz is being considered for a major honour, the BBC has learned.
Denis Avey, 91, who lives in Derbyshire, helped save Ernst Lobethall, a German Jew from Breslau.

He is being considered for the title of "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem.

The story emerged following a recent BBC investigation.

Mr Avey said it would be "marvellous" if he were chosen for the title, which is awarded to those who helped save Jewish people."

I don't see any good reson to save a jew and the "honor" is a symbol of torture. Jews mutilate their babies penises.

Jews are barbaric and deny their own children HUMAN RIGHTs.

Cutting children and babies without anesthetic is representative of the inhumane treatment the jews got in the camps.

The Jews obviously didn't learn that creul treatment begets cruel treatment.

Wow - what a wonderful story!

He risked everything for someone he didn't know, and to make sure the world knew about the horrors of the death camps. An outstanding man indeed.

Thank you for the link, Vendaval [:)]

After reading this I had to check, and much to surprise my foreskin was missing.

I don't know how or when this happened.

My guess is those Jew doctors are secretly breaking into homes at night, sedating unsuspecting males and stealing their foreskins to use in some kind of Jewy ritual.

Those bastards!

You have been on CM for 2 years and this is the best you can do for a first post?  Although thinking about it, maybe it is a good idea to show people right of the bat, what kind of loser you are. You can go stand next to bella, I have a feeling the two of you will probably hit it off.

OP....nice link. It's good to be reminded of the people out there who actually care about others to offset idiots like bella and snork.

Speaking of idiots, how long before R1 shows up to spew his bs?

He is a testimant to the good in humans. We see far to many stories about the evil - it is nice to hear about the good.

Good for him - I watched the piece they did on him a couple of months back; truly incredible bravery to risk it once, let alone twice, posing as a Jewish inmate. And we shouldnt forget the decency of his counterpart either, in swapping back after each occasion, knowing it was almost certain death to go back.

Denis was apparently sent to Auschwitz for being a problem prisoner who played the nazis up something terrible. You wouldnt think so to look at him now, but he was one heck of a hellraiser in his youth, as he admitted himself on the broadcast I watched. He saved Ernst with two things from what I remember - he gave Ernst some strong boots and he provided cigarettes. Denis thought Ernst had perished in the camps, but as it turned out Ernst had survived and only died relatively recently. From what I recall, I think Denis said he survived the Dresden bombing too, having been evacuated that way by the nazis (along with thousands of others, which is why Dresden was so awful).

Such a shame that this generation is now passing so quickly. Its unbelievable as it is that certain idiots call them all liars and frauds and have been these last 65 years. It will only get more difficult to avoid a repeat if its left to us second hand witnesses to testify, against the majority environment of imbeciles in the modern world.

Thank you for the wonderful story.

There are people who don't stop to think if it is in their own interest, if there's gonna be any money in it for them, if they are gonna get famous, who don't worry about who is religious or who is what color or political party.  There ARE people who know good and DO it.

In the Lutheran prayer of confession we confess that we sin by what we have done, and by what we have left un-done.  I struggle daily with the latter part and am often ashamed.

This man is an example to me and I'm thankful for this story.
