You may recall my  recent thread about being out of whack.  As it turns out my potassium dropped.   Today I await follow up lab results to figure out any treatment.

fun fun fun.  (not)

Any constructive conversation welcomed.

If the potassium level is down, it could be secondary to dehydration, and in that case, other levels (sodium, for example) might also be out of whack.

Do not try to replenish your levels through Gatorade or any of that crap. When i was working in an Emergency room, Gatorade was called The Bottled Heart Attack because of the high potassium levels. Do not do anything on your own at this point that is not recommended by your PCP.

Potassium has a direct effect on the bodies muscles, and that includes the heart. A sudden blast of potassium can stop the heart of one who is deficient.

What about eating a banana?

If Hunky is under medical care for this, i really would suggest running an increase of potassuim rich foods by the PCP first, especially if his level is being closely monitored, since the doctor might want to see what his level does on its own.

But an fyi that i found interesting...of all the fruits, Kiwi has the highest level of potassium (but bananas are a hell of a lot easier to peel). Veggie wise, baked potatoes are a terrific source, but french fries and mashed potatoes are less so, probably because there is more cooking involved.

i'm sorry, pahunkboy. i have a *weirdness where mine is always low unless i take a fancy smancy supplement everyday.

NuSalt is salt substitute made of potassium. It has a bitter taste, but it makes a good seasoning for some things.
Bran cereals are generally higher in potassium, yogurt, orange juice...
Cmail me if you don't like bananas either, lol.

edited for i is typo faery

* Weirdness; medical condition that stumped the doctors

When the fighters got hot on the feild (they do look hot in armor and chainmail) bowls of pickles were passed about. I never knew pickles were good for dehydration.

pahunkboy -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/5/2010 12:31:21 PM)

I been eating crackers.  Propel-

Oranges.

I do have bananas- but I doubt they would stay down.   Odd thing- the vits I take have 80 mg of it IN them.  But too- this is an opportunity to tweak my meds- which I think need changing for High Blood Pressure and inflamed prostrate.

I am limited as to what I may eat- and how much due to throwing it up--

Keep in mind- I traditionally chug water all day- eat lots of vegies.

Propel makes a powder one can mix up.

Our public water here smells very chlorinated lately.

Anyhow- I have a good repore with my DR- and am sure he will figure it out.   :-)

Perplexing that a simple nutrient can take a person down.

Umm. . . I believe that if you are throwing up this is likely what is causing your potassium to be out of whack.

You might try pedialite drink or the ice-pops.

Termyn8or -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/5/2010 11:13:45 PM)

First of all, it's pretty damn hard to be low on potassium intake. Wheat and potatoes have a bunch, and that means bread, pasta, fries all that should have a good amount. Potassium is a mineral so it is not destroyed by cooking, but could be extracted by boiling.

It is more likely that you have a deficiency in one of potassium's co-components, which will cause your body to excrete it in the urine or perspiration. Speaking of which, drink and pissing too much or working out and sweating too much can bring about a deficiency. But if it happen via either one of those methods, potassium is not the only thing you lose. You lose a few other minerals at the same time, including sodium.

Unless you are living on meat, water and tootsie rolls you should not have a potassium deficiency. What is happening is that other nutrients required either to properly assimilate it or use it effectively in the body are missing or low in level. Twenty four minerals are recognized as essential to life, I suggest you familirize yourself with them. I have very very detailed information on about half of them I can send you. More than half of them in fact.

The same thing happens to calcium in the body. If the body can't use it then it just accumulates somewhere. Hear of gallstones and bladder stones ? Same thing happens to sodium along with some of the components of fat. So we have clogged arteries with this plaque. There is no such thing as bad cholesterol. It's just that the body for whatever reason cannot assimilate it and use it properly. That's probably some other component of whatever the body was going to use it for is missing.

Typically the body passes the unused minerals out via the urine. Now I am assuming that your blood potassium is low, but what of a urinalysis ? If you have alot of potassium in the urine I think I might be right, that your body is expelling it because for whatever reason cannot use it.

I take potassium becuase I am taking a duiertic for water loss (my sexy legs are bloated...HELP!)  So far, I have not passed out like I usually do.  If there is a banana in the house, I eat it instead of taking the pill.

Last time I had a whacky potassium level, I had to be hospitalized for over 10 days.  Could not keep anything down and they put a central line in me so I can get fluids.

pahunkboy -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/6/2010 7:18:40 AM)

I hear you.

My legs are painful this week.

gotta argue this one Termy. The most common cause of a potassium deficiency is dehydration, and it happens more frequently than we care to think about. Having too much alcohol, a fever, excessive exertion, or just a day you are too busy to stop and down a few bottles of water...they all generally result in some level of dehydration.

I have heard it said that if you are thirsty, you have reached the dehydration level. Most of us are not aware of a low potassium level because, with no thought involved, we re-hydrate before it becomes an issue.

pahunkboy -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/6/2010 12:30:13 PM)

I thought I had my lab work back.  But -- it is from last year.  Silly me.

I tend to take care of myself diet wise- I mean I chug water and eat veggies.

However- I am going easy on eating- as it must digest.   I am eating- but smaller portions and certain foods.

pahunkboy -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/7/2010 7:16:10 AM)

I want to thank all here.

I went to Aldis.  Pickles included.

It appears my blood work has normalized... so that is good news.   I tho- am asking my DR to tweak my meds so I can sleep at night.

Here you go, just in case...

Termyn8or -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/7/2010 7:49:39 AM)

"gotta argue this one Termy"

Caught me. IIRC there is a diuretic involved.

Also I was reading something by those who want to "stop the water torture" claining that the requirement for eight glasses or whatever every day is dead wrong, and that people should just drink when they get thirsty.

Generally people get plenty of potassium, but you need alot of potassium. The problem may be that some people's bodies can't hold onto it. And of course the effects of drugs escaped me, perhaps because I don't take any.

The other thing is if someone is low on porassium, I'd chance a bet they are low on a few otther essential minerals as well. I'd like to find a place where I could just send in a blood sample and have it analysed for at least the 24 commonly recognized essential minerals.

Of course there are two problems with that. One is that alot of these minerals go to the organs where they are needed, so the level in the blood might be misleading. What's more is there is no way to tell if what is in the blood came from one's diet, or was extracted from the body due to a deficiency.

So thanks for the heads up. I have to remember just how many people are chronically on some sort of drug for whatever reason. Their body chemistry is being tampered with, and the effects are understandably unpredictable.

Thanks.   The medical here is pretty good.  I am in good hands.   Yay.  :-)

pahunkboy -> RE: Potassium was LOW- utoh (4/9/2010 10:07:30 AM)

Hello,

Over the past week or so, I have had a constructive dialogue and labs works- a few tests.  My DR, and I now plot an adjustment in my meds- which is agreeable to me.

Based on all the results- I plan to follow his regiment.

Understand- that this took a while to work out- including me firing a DR over it.

Medications can improve life- and they ALSO can destroy lifes.

I spent 7 years with a boyfriend who was a drug addict.  DRUGS KILL.
For these reasons- I always insist in active participation in any treatment plan.

I have a right to my body- to my being- and a say so on what I do to it.

I do NOT regret taking effexxor down- an antidepressant.

One should  review any treatment plan 2-3 times a year. As things change.

My DR is aware of the full context of my health, my views, and concise assessment of the prognosis.

Thanks to all who put up with me.  Special huge to those who understood my plight(s).

Anywho- Have a great day.
