I've watched this several more times over the last hour or so, and the more I look at it the less fault I find with the helicopter crew. If you look at the video in that link, at the 3:40 mark you can clearly see at least two men with weapons - one apparently an AK-47, or similar weapon with a banana clip, and the other with what seems clearly to be an RPG. These men are obviously insurgents, and correctly identified as such. The reporters are mingling with this group and moving through them as they move behind a building, and the men with the assault rifle and RPG disappear behind the same building - at around 4:00 of the video.

A few moments later, the man we now know is the photographer pokes his nose around the corner of the building, but there was no way for the helicopter crew to know who he was or what he was pointing. When the helicopter swings around the building to get a clear shot, all the men are mingling again. At this point, I can't think of any reason the helicopter wouldn't shoot. There had been a firefight nearby a short time earlier between insurgents and American ground forces, and that was the reason the helicopter was there. Now they've got more American ground forces heading in that direction, a group of armed insurgents taking positions of concealment behind a building, and it looks as though they're setting up an ambush. Of course they're going to shoot. There's no reason for them not to.

The more I look at this, the more it looks to me as though the Reuters reporters were embedding themselves with an insurgent unit hoping to get footage of an ambush. I could be wrong, but that's the way it looks to me. If that's the case, they've got nobody but themselves to blame for being dead. Even at best - at the very least - they knew damned well that they were with a group of armed insurgents in an area where American forces had just been attacked. This was a predictable outcome, and they knew it. C'est la vie. Or rather, c'est la guerre.

Hey, can you tell me where you live? I want your local police to be sure that if your life appears to be in danger, to get the possible criminals to fill out questionares before any action is taken in case the person about to blow you away is actually there to water your lawn.

I'm guessing you didnt serve in the military, did you? Don't worry. I did. to protect the rights of idots to express themselves. You're welcome.

I think you're just a little confused..I don't recall any "discussion" we had concerning economics....and I certainly wouldn't have ever claimed socialism(as I understand socialism to actually be....I have a suspicion we wouldn't agree on the definition) as the cure all to all of our problems.
Now the "little shit" line....yep,that I could see..especially seeing as the epitath seems to fit you to a tee!
Now to the case at point....your complaint that I don't engage you based on your "ideas".....I invite you to look at your post,the one I responded to.....what idea was imbedded there.....all you did was take a shot at another poster,allow me to refresh your memory...and I quote...

I don't mind if you're against the concept of war, that's all well and good, but sitting at your computer desk making decisions after the fact, telling soldiers what they should have known or done, makes you look like a fool. Anyone can give good advice after watching a video recording with handy labels telling them who is whom. It's ridiculous.

I've watched the video twice now and I can find no fault with the troops, unless someone else invovled had a better view which doesn't appear to be the case. The radio chatter shows that the gunners and pilots involved believed they had legitimate targets. they requested and received permission to engage before firing both times.

Were people in that group armed? It certainly looks like it. Did one of the men kneel and poke a bulbous object that looked a lot like a RPG around the corner of a building? Yes. Would I have sought permission to engage in the same situation? Almsot certainly.

It is a tragedy and a terrible accident but tragedies and terrible accidents occur in war. We should get out of Iraq as soon as possible so that they stop dieing at our hands.

It's a tough video to watch and discern exactly what should have been the correct course of action.

I would have liked to see more people armed. How does one go about identifying insurgents? Once you take the reporters out of the equation, it appears that you could see one gun/rifle and possibly an RPG.(?) Is that enough to open fire on what appears to be a largely unarmed group of people?

Tough call. You know that the guys in the hele are gung-ho to get busy. You can here it in their voices. It makes sense, it is what you spend years training for and you got the big gun...sucks not to be able to use it.

Kind of like the movie "Jarhead."

It's a no win situation...Let's get out.

Your comment was ridiculous, as "conservative economics" is allied with some of the greatest economic thinkers of history. It was one of those meaningless displays of partisanism that people like to spew on this forum in order to make themselves feel like they're on the "right side" of things.

I disagree with conservatives on many things but economics is one thing they seem to have down pat. Please don't confuse "neo-cons" with conservatives.
