The Los Padres National Forest is the largest intact habitat of the California Condor. These magnificent birds are coming back from near certain extinction, there are now approximately 75 flying free in Cal. I have not yet had the good fortune to see one in the wild.

What we do have in this area are an abundance of turkey vultures, that soar on the warm thermal currents of the valleys and hills here. Their wing span can be 6 feet across and they
frequently gather in groups out in the eucalyptus groves. If wishing to view these birds closer, be advised that they will vomit up the contents of their stomach upon any creature coming to close to their nests!

*Splat! Take that intruder!

Man, I am kind of bummed out that this thread isn't about the Klingon Bird of Prey, but then I am happy that real life birds are doing fine.  Although if this leads to an increase in bird crap everywhere I will get my aerosol can and fill my fridge with Freon, so help me G-d.

They're hatching!

Hey Sanity, do you guys have local webcams on the peregrines?

cpK69 -> RE: Birds Of Prey (5/25/2010 2:40:51 PM)

You're welcome, Thomas.

Got to see the three of them being fed, a bit ago; so cool.

Glad you shared. : )

Yes, I am watching the adults as they shuttle in and out to feed them. The chicks will get big fast from here on out!

Cool!

It was hard to tell if the egg was still there, or not, when I was looking earlier.

Thanks.

One of them just brought in a pigeon and is currently ripping it apart and giving them pieces of it. I thought they regurgitated the food for their young but this is going straight from the carcass to their mouths.

Louve00 -> RE: Birds Of Prey (5/27/2010 5:25:19 AM)

I do think its pretty cool...and have been watching.  I also gave the link to my co-workers and my daughters school.  We have everyone here in central Fla and MN watching these birds [:D]

The sound is a great addition! I love hearing the falcons scream. The chicks are big now, aren't they.

I saw a golden eagle over my pasture twice in the past month, the first time it had come after a European swallow which was running along the ground because it apparently couldn't fly. As the eagle swooped in the swallow ran into a steel wire box I have protecting a young tree from my cattle and the eagle landed on the box. Then a couple of magpies began harassing the eagle and forced it to leave.

I've seen magpies harassing a large tom cat near here as well, taking turns pecking at its tail. Brave and quick, those magpies.

I've got to get a picture of the eagle to post here. Sometimes it sits in the top of some large dead trees in the field just to the East of mine, and I'm betting that I'll eventually be able to capture some photos of it there.

The local chicks are flying now. 2 moved to a different site while learning to fly and there are some great videos of them posted here:

Listening to the wind, when it is blowing constantly, is a bit unnerving, but I enjoy listening to the birds, too.

I’m still amazed at how much bigger they are than what they appear on the camera.

Did you see the new pics of the fish and game person holding one?

You can see their progress from one day to the next; it’s that fast. Amazing!

I wonder if that is general magpie behavior, or if they are protecting something?

I look forward to seeing pictures of the golden eagle. [:D]

I should get back over to my parent’s. I wouldn’t mind seeing the bald eagle again, maybe a pair of them, sometime.

Kim

I filmed video of the magpies attacking the cat through my front window, and it earned me a t-shirt and a $100 check from the "Planets Funniest Animals" show. (The shirt was claimed by my daughter, who loves that show). I don't know what the magpies' motive was in harassing the cat but the the magpies in my pasture which were attacking that eagle were definately trying to protect the starling. Or at least it sure looked that way.

Really?? You're kidding! I guess I'm luckier than I realized, then. I've seen a number of them just up the road from you. I'd say about 50 miles south of Monterey, right around Sand Dollar Beach.... probably 10 miles up and down the coast from that general area. They seem to like to hang near the Coast Highway. It's an impressive bird.

I should post some pictures; I think I've got some on the other computer. The problem I had was I snapped on too large a lens, because I wasn't taking into my calculations how large they were. I had a hard time getting the whole bird into the frame; I had to wait until they flew a little farther away to get decent shots.
