This is one of the reasons I don't want to go off my birth control I have been on for years...Yikes! From what I am always reading on threads such as this I am afraid if I go off of it I don't know what will happen as I haven't had any symptoms yet.

Yea, it can suck. The hot flashes were the weirdest thing to me. The whole boiling from the inside out was just strange. Of course, meanwhile I have one of those guys who is always cold. We don't live together, but when I would spend the night at his house it was torture! He has one of those electric mattress pads, plus a space heater. Meanwhile, I'm laying there sweating my ass off! Thankfully the hot flashes stopped completely a few months ago. No tapering off, just stopped. The man kept telling me they were better than the cold flashes his mom got, but I can't agree. I would much rather be cold than hot. I can always try to get warm. When he said something about freezing in 90 degree weather, I kept thinking how great that would be, lol. What a way to say on air conditioning!

So now the only thing that sucks is the erratic periods. Sometimes two a month, other times I won't get one for 3 months. Never know when they will show up or whether it will be a "drip drip" or, as a friend used to call it, "hemorraging day." With all the other medical problems, I'm regularly going for some test or other where they are asking me for the date of my last period. I give them a date several months earlier and then they want to know if I'm pregnant. I've given up trying to explain, I just tell them to give me the cup so I can pee in it, lol.

Like others I chose to skip any type of hormone replacement or other type of pharmaceutical or herbal supplements. The hot flashes seem to have passed and I will be thrilled when the periods are done.

Update...

Good news on the menstrual migraines: now that I am on the full dose, Topamax seems to have stopped them entirely. [:)]

I have always had very strong hormone responses( heavy flow, severe mood swings, insane food cravings)and been regular as clockwork. Now that I have hit the pre stage I can't track my cycles anymore, one month I am two weeks late the next I am a week early. That alone is frustrating for me, but I can also add to the list night sweats, headaches bloating and I never know what to expect from my flow when it does arrive. Anti depressants are not helping the mood issues.
Thank you ladies for sharing your experiances with the rest of us. It gives me a few other bits of info I can share with my doc, as well as the comfort of knowing there maybe more options then what my back woods country doc has in his repitoire.(sp)

I'm surprised antidepressants aren't helping. They not only controlled my depression, they also stopped the night sweats.
