I never thought much of peri-woes until the last couple of months and all of a sudden... boom!

I began getting headaches a few months ago around the time I had my period. These headaches have evolved into full-fledged "menstrual migraines" which for those who don't know, are a lot like regular migraines... IF the migraines were on steroids. In other words, they are much worse.
In addition I pretty much become temporaily insane for a couple of days  every month... .

Basically for nearly a week every month I am quite dysfunctional and once all is well in the world again, I know I have the same to look forward to again ...next month.

Since misery loves company, for those of us who are going down the rabbit hole and care to share... I am sure there will be people here to commiserate with you.

Edit: gramatical continuity

I'm still 'Pre' myself, but I got a wonderful taste of what is to come when I tried the Nuvaring for birth control. That bastard gave me hot flashes from Hell. As soon as I figured out what was going on, I couldn't rip it out fast enough. I think I'm going to have to invent a personal, portable air conditioned bubble in which to travel during my change of life.

I am on the tail end of all of that. It's been almost two years since I had a period so...

I think I was lucky. At least moreso than a lot of women I know.

Yes I had the personality shift, headaches, and super heavy periods for awhile. Then taaadaaaaaaaaa, the hot flashes. But I did learn that there were some things that helped. How I ate was HUGE. Also maintaining a healthy weight and getting a lot of exercise. One thing that did catch me by surprise was aside from hot flashes, my tolerance to heat became dramatically less. I almost gave myself heat stroke several times before I figured it out.

So, do not be like me, if and when that time comes. If you are working outside in the heat and start getting over heated ( I felt like my head was going to explode and my face turned beet red...not attractive), take a break. Make sure you drink A LOT of water and relax. Chilllllllllllllllllllll.

Thanks LaT,
re: heat intolerance, I had that happen last week.
Master parked me.
My thyroid is low, so I tend to be cold...except for now when I'm not.
There is no happy medium; I am either smurf blue or beet red.

I know there are things that can be done to manage (or prevent) headaches and I will be working on that with Drs. .
I have heard that magnesium can help some women a lot with that.

I hate that things take time to figure out... I have always been patient, but this is affecting me aprox 20% of the time...and I still get my periods.

I have had migraines and severe PMS. Until I got on low dose birth control. I was able to get offanti depressants because of it. I still get rugular periods. Though they are now lighter on the mini pill.

i get moody and really teary sometimes, and get these unexplainable headaches from hell that come out of nowhere and take forever to go away. i can't relate them to my period, as i've had a hysterectomy (still have my ovaries). And i have low thyroid which used to make me cold, but since peri-menopause hit, i got these hot flashes from hell. They feel like the blast you get when you open a car door in 100 degree weather, except they're from the inside out. And my mother died from breast cancer, so estrogren is out of the question for me. Then my friend told me about Vitex, a natural capsule made from the chaste tree berry, that normalizes estrogen levels but does not contain phyto-estrogens (plant estrogens). Now i use that and it's helping.....some. Not totally, but better than nothing. i can't wait for this to be over with. i'm 52 and have no idea how long it will last.

kitten,

Since you still have your ovaries, it is still related to the hormone levels connected to your menstrual cycle, you just don't shed the uterine lining anymore.
You might want to look into menstrual migraines.

Oh my sweet, I'm so sorry your struggling with this phase of your life. As a lady who is on the other side and no longer have monthlies I assure you it is absolute HEAVEN to be done with it. There are things your doctor can give you including short term hormones to ease you through the transition. I myself prefer to be on HRT permanantly but that is a choice only you can make. It does get better!

I chose to avoid the hormone stuff........very glad I did. But again, it's all been pretty tolerable for me.

i kind of knew they were hormone-related, i was just saying i didn't know when they were in relation to a period, cause i don't have them anymore.

I'm 47 and have been in peri-menopause for the last 7 yrs or so. I also have PCOS, so I get to deal with both. I hadn't had a period since late December. Told my best friend on Monday. OOOO, it came back to bite me in the ass. That same day, of course, I started. It's been 2 days of hell. As usual. Migraines, severe cramping, no energy. The hot flashes, otherwise known as power surges, have been a constant companion for 2 months. I have freezing cold tootsies and the rest of my body is in the red zone. Waking up in a cold sweat is an every night occurrence.

I remember my mom went through this for over 15 yrs. I'm still waiting to see a doc or ob/gyn. For now, I get about 2 hrs sleep at a time, if I'm lucky. Add to that major depression, anxiety, whatever else disorder pops up, it's just been fun fun fun. Now someone turn on the heat and the a/c at the same time. My toes are frozen, the rest of my body feels like the devil is sitting behind me and is baking me from the inside out.

Reading all this "pre" stuff makes me soooo glad I had a hysterectomy at 35... I had to go on HRT because of my age and history of osteoperosis in my family.  I´ve been pain free, pms free, period free  for 15 years and after the hell I went through prior to... it´s been heaven.

I'd have to look up my last chemo, because that's when it started.

During the other 3, I had Rituxan, Vincristine, Cytoxan, and Prenisone, and my period stayed normal throughout.  I can't remember what that last chemo was, but I lost my period while having it.  Then, those sudden blasts of heat from hell started.  The nights were the worst, all night long it was blankets on, blankets off, for what felt like hundreds of times.  Sometimes the hot flashes aren't so bad, sometimes they're severe.

I've always had migraines, but these were and are almost always with me, the only thing varying is the intensity.  The oncologist got smart with me one time because I stopped taking some pill he was giving me for them (they weren't doing anything to help, and the side effects sucked) anyway... when I whined about it once, he told me "Then you must enjoy pain."

He has such a hateful job that I try to be nice to the little pr**k.

Anyway, it's been around 4 or 5 years now, with no end in sight.  The gyno I went to refused to give me HRT.  I've had NHL, not breast cancer, ovarian, etc.

Another thing I've noticed since starting menopause (perio or whatever) is that my panic attacks get triggered more often, and differently.  Usually without the expected triggers, and right when one is hitting, I taste/smell heparin (what they inject into my portacath to keep it clear every 6 weeks, and I can smell/taste it at that time) and that taste/smell overwhelms me with nausea.  So now, I'm enjoying hot flashes and playing Pokemon on my D/s machine when WHAM, I "smell/taste" that odor, and I lunge for some perfume to overpower it and avoid hurling.  I also get a feeling of guilt hit me at the same time.

I don't know how much of that is due to rampaging hormones, and how much is survivor's guilt.  Part of the reason I was absent from here for around two years is that a friend of mine got sick and took almost a year to die.  Two Dec. 24ths ago.  There was nobody here for her but me, and I had to become medical power of attourney and then legal power of attourney, and the shiite from that never ends.  I learned more than I ever wanted to learn and had a very bad year.  I'm also so tired of doctors and medical smells that I could scream, so I have put off doctor appointments for myself that I shouldn't have.  I'm way overdue for my gyn, physical, and blah blah blah.  Also, during nasty weather I don't make appointments, as I may be unable or unwilling to get off my hill.

After reading several different threads here, my to do list is building up, lol.

As for moodiness, no.  I only get to enjoy my enhanced panic attacks, that now are served with a side order of vertigo.  During these, I've noticed that my blood pressure goes up into borderline.

I witnessed my mother's mood swings years ago, after she'd had a complete hysterectomy.  She was Senora Psychopath, whenever she was late for or had forgotten her hormone pills.

Ladies, I'd thought there was a connection between more frequent and more intense migraines but no doctor I've mentioned them to ever put two and two together for me.  I only get around 3 periods per year, but the pain is like someone drove an ax into my skull, and I couldn't get anyone else to understand the intensity.  I've had to stay in the dark and keep mostly to my bed for that week, believe me, it's not a Tylenol cured headache.  Thanks for showing me that there is a definite connection.

And exhaustion.  When the hot flashes intensify, those are the weeks when I'm exhausted 24/7.  Sometimes I go maybe a few months between having bad flashes and just low level ones.  Whenever I have a period, I don't get any hot flashes at least from ovulation time until 4-6 weeks later.

Hallelujah Sistah!!!

Although not at the menopause yet, I saw my sister, my mother and both of her sisters go through hell with it. I've been told that this IUD will last another couple of years for birth control, then one more will go in and that'll see me through the menopause with few or no symptoms. And then that's it.
Imho it's THE best form of birth control ever (for me) - no periods, no cramps, no migraines, very few mood swings....perfect!
