Admission is a good way to turn off the heat in politics, RML. Bush's answer was sufficient to handle anybody who might have come forward that saw him smoke a joint or snort a line. Obama's admission clearly reveals that he was much more into drugs, with a lot more potential eyewitnesses to that fact, than Bush ever was. Then we have that 17 minute answer not so long ago... Are you guys sure you want to be going down this path?

Sorry Rich, but I see it differently. The issue is not who did more drugs, how often and who may have witnessed it. The issue is the hypocricy, or at least the perception of it. This is no different than Sara Palin with a pregnant daughter, Larry Craig being gay, or Ensign's affair. The Republicans preen themselves to be the epitomy of Biblical morality and family values. Americans can forgive just about anything but hypocricy. It is also what brought down Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat.

Right, Brainia...[8\|] Every Republican is a fundy-rightie, right? Like me for instance? We have been witnessing an evolution in how the drug question gets answered. Bush's "when I was young and irresponsible, I was young and irresponsible," was a great leap forward from Clinton's "didn't inhale" bullshit. Obama has been more forthcoming yet. Maybe a little too forthcoming for the comfort of those of us who understand drug use, abuse, and full blown addictive behaviors, and what those things look like..

He did something similar in another thread, and I asked what proof he had that Bush snorted cocaine while in the office. Then rulemylife came back with the same ole shit about a young Bush which was scurrilous when it was first made and still did not address the point. Somehow, as boi pointed out, when a conservative (oh, ok, damnit) or at least a Republic has youthful follies, they are branded for life, but when a liberal "icon" does the same or similar things, he is fetted for being "strong" and overcoming his problems to become the light of the country. No Rich, every Republican is not a fundie-righty, but nearly every fundie-righty is a Republican. Being a social centrist and a Republican is almost an oxymoron. The party itself does a good job of excluding those who aren't conservative enough, especially on social issues. I, for one, accept Bush's explanation as reasonable and true, much more so than Clinton's lame attempt at political correctness, but like I said, Bush being part of the GOP raises real credibility issues in the eyes of many who see the Republicans as representing the moral majority.

Firm, I can't speak to what others have said previously in this thread. I am only speaking to the general publics willingness to give liberals (Democrats) a pass on such issues as drug use, homosexuality, out of wedlock pregnancy, extramarital affairs, etc. while at the same time holding a seemingly double standard when it comes to conservatives (Republicans). The issue absolutely is hypocricy.
