I will be having a knee replacement later this month and am curious about limitations after surgery. From a 2008 thread here it seems kneeling will no longer be possible. And I understand that I should wait at least two to three months and maybe longer before doing anything.

I'm wondering about bondage, restraint and struggling while restrained. Hog-ties, spread eagles, etc.

Anyone here have a knee replacement or know someone with a knee replacement. If so, how has it effected BD/SM participation as a bottom/slave/sub?

My Dad had a knee replacement last year and he is still not back to 100%. It was three or four months before he could bend his knee any significant amount at all and he still can't bend it fully almost one year after the operation. Now he is in his early eighty's so someone younger will re cooperate quicker, but don't plan on doing any kneeling for quite some time after the operation. Hog ties and any bondage position where your knee will need to bend will also be out of the question.

I had a knee replacement four years ago and had regained full use of it after three months. The trick is to do any physio exercises that they give you. Kneeling on it though, gets painful quite quickly. From my own experience it is better than before the op, but far from perfect. I have also been told after about ten years the new joint wears out, depending on how active you are.

I knew younger people would heal faster than my dear old Dad. Glad to hear that you recovered faster from your operation than he did from his.

Politesub,

You are correct that the new knee could wear out. Don't be too worried though. Usually what wears out is the Polyethyline spacer between the femur and tibia components. It is a quick fix and very common. Only if you are having loose fitting implants, then the Doc will have to put in a totally new knee.

I've had two knee replacements - a total in 2002 and a partial in 2007 - and I can comfortably kneel on the bed if I am on all fours. Kneeling on a hard surface is out. Overall, it hasn't limited my activities as a sub. My Sir is creative.

The secret to a successful recovery is to do the exercises the physical therapist gives you. It will hurt like hell and you will grow to hate the therapist but in the long run it is worth it.

My father had both knees replaced. Each one took about 4 to 6 months to recover from. I do not think kneeling will be out of the question for you though you may want to consider padding. Ask your doctor about kneeling.

my sister had a double knee replacement, and she went to P/t 4x a week. it didnt take at all and now she is confined to a wheelchair
for the rest of her life. Sucky part is that she is across the country from me and i cannot help her.

eta: dontaions to move cross country to be with her are MORE then welcome lol!

Took me six weeks to heal from ac replacement. I can't imagine how long it will take for the entire knee.

I am a physical therapist and in the past month have worked with 6 total knee replacement patients. Recovery time varies with each individual. I had one go home after 3 weeks with full range and no gait deviations, while another does not have full range because she has a low tolerance to pain and won't allow much movement. Kneeling after a knee replacement is not recommended. Bondage should be ok in certain positions as long as there is not too much pressure on the knee.
