I would like to hear from women taking progesterone in peri-menopause.  I want to know about possible side-effects you have experienced and if you feel that this sort of therapy has been helpful to your overall quality of life.

Luckly I had no side effects.  I was just able to sleep at night finally.  My concentration was back and I could remember what I had read on a page of a book.  Without it I would have had to stop attending college as I was at the point where I couldn't remember shit, or anything else.

I take natural progesterone and it does make me more highly sexed.

Katy...i have taken an injectable progesterone for a different reason, but there were no side effects at all.

Thank you, for all of the replies.  This is will the standard pill form.  I have had 6+ months of misery and I am at the point where I will try anything.  I was always opposed to hormonal therapy, but my gyno says it is the right thing to try at this point.

Katy, please do some research on natural progesterone. Synthetic progesterone (what you are probably taking) really doesn't work at all efficiently.
I was very young when I went into early menopause and spent the first year of that on synthetic progesterone. I was miserable. I had wanted to have another baby but all that looked hopeless. My sex drive disappeared, my hair and skin looked dull and my mood swings were like tidal waves. I then started to research what was happening to me and started to read about natural progesterone versus synthetic. Within a year of taking it I wasn't only having regular periods again but I was confirmed pregnant.
I have carried on taking natural progesterone and I will for the rest of my life. At 37 my periods had all but stopped but I didn't go through the drudgery of menopause like so many women do. I still feel good, have a great sex drive and I'm told I look good for my age and I'm certain (and so is my doctor) that natural progesterone was my savior.

I take Camila which I'm sure is a synthetic progesterone based pill. They gave it to me because they told me I could no longer take the birth control pill because I have some mutated gene which makes it dangerous for me to take estrogen based birth control.....Ironically the same thing which makes it just as dangerous for me to get pregnant.  I don't know that I've had any side effects, other than ever few months my cycles are horrible....
Maria I would be really grateful for any information you'd be willing to share on natural progesterone.

Thanks,

Kali

I am also interested in this info as I return to my doc in 3 months and would like to discuss this with him.

my body produces very high levels of estrogen, because of the endometriosis.
Doctors thought that using progesterone might counteract the estrogen's effects...
We opted to go with the natural stuff, and;

my PMS went away,
my feet were swollen and i had to buy one size larger shoes,
my boobs grew two cups sizes, but no hairy weirdness,
my hips got wider,
i gained five pounds,

It wasn't so bad, but it didn't help with my high estrogen levels... However, the women i know that have taken the same stuff for peri'm have only had good things to say about it.

This http://www.healthyhormones.com/faqs2.htm is a good website but there is lots of information out there. Take particular attention to what it says about your general practitioners attitude. My own doctor really wasn't interested until he saw the results. He went on to become an advocate of natural progesterone and has had some very successful results with many of his patients.
Don't be fooled though. A good diet and plenty of fluids (not coffee) are another important part of your hormone balancing act. Also get your progesterone levels checked, at least once a year.
I use a topical cream called 'Balance'. It comes in a plastic tub with a dowdy label and it really looks like something a quack has put together as some little side line money earner but its the one that works best for me (I have tried others) Don't be tempted to overdose either. When you get something that really works, its tempting to double the dose. The correct dosage is there for a reason and taking too much of such a sensitive hormone will upset the balance.

I am already off the coffee, over 6 months at this point.  For some reason, peri-menopause has ushered in some GI issues that I have never experienced before.  I have discovered that giving up the coffee bean, in all of its forms is one of the best things I have ever done.  I miss iced lattes, but my GI tract thanks me every day.   And it is possible to get used to hot tea, really it is, as long as it is black tea and very strong.

If katy's GI tract is happy then everyone is happy.
