January -> story (9/16/2004 9:15:34 AM)

Hi,

I've written a bdsm erotica novella, which I'm going to submit to an erotica publisher after a last polish.

I'd love if you could give me comments on the first part. I'm afraid it's not juicy (the fun stuff comes later), but I'm never very confident about the beginnings of anything I write.

I hope you'll tell me if you care about my character. Are you willing to find out what happens to her?

Thank you!

Jan

Thank you all for your help!

I've erased the snippet because I'm sending the whole thing off to the publishers tomorrow. If anything good happens, I'll post.

Thanks again,

January

January,
Very nice. I'm like roe, I wanna know NOW...lol. When are you going to post the rest?

Hi Board Greeter roebabe and Myra,

Thank you for your comments!

I'm going to submit the story to "New Concepts Publishing". I think it's an e-publisher only. But they are looking for bdsm romances.

As for what's happening, I'll give you a hint: He's cheating on her and she goes looking for another partner.

If that is the non juicy part, we are all going to need catch basins under our computers to read the juicy part when it comes out - all I can say is what a beginning!!

only quesiton I have is with this sentence
quote:

As if to underscore the difference between us, his silver flesh tunnels caught the Rocky Mountain sun.
- I dont get what you mean by "his silver flesh tunnels"

Thanatosian,

Thank you! I will fix the flesh tunnels.

Regarding the catch basins: YOU should talk! Your twisted acronyms are such hot poetry it's giving me blisters.

why thankee - since I dont have the talent to actually write anything like a story, I'll take what literary triumphs I can get

altho, basically, I just try to keep the acronym in the BDSM setting (if possible)

January -> progress report on submitting my story (10/1/2004 1:08:31 PM)

Okay,

In case someone is interested in what it's like to try to get stuff published, I'll use this thread as a weblog. I hope it's okay with the Mods.

So, last week I sent my story off to three publishers. The first two got the story by e-mail, and the third will get a hard copy by slow post.

Within hours, I heard from the first publisher: "We don't take first person POV stories. Can you rewrite in third person and resubmit?"

My thoughts: This publisher's submission guidelines say only they "prefer" third person. Using first person apparently changed from a soft limit to a hard limit. Why can't these folks tell if it's a good story even if it IS in first person?

I heard from the other publisher soon after I submitted electronically. First to let me know they'd received the story. A day later, I got another e-mail that said, "We don't take short stories unless you've already published a longer work with us. Can you add another 20,000 words and resubmit?"

My thoughts: Okay, no mention of this condition in their guidelines. And are they REALLY saying I lack enough street cred for a "quickie"? I guess so.

I am still optimistic about the other publisher. I had previously sent them an e-mail query to which they responded favorably, so presumably they know it's a 15,000 word, first person, bdsm romance--and that's okay with them.

I know a BDSM writer who has been published on and off line. I'll ask him who he goes through. Any tips, etc. See what we can come up with. Last update he gave me he was going to be traveling a bit. So, it may take me a little while to reach him but I'll get back to you when I do.

cariad -> RE: story (10/1/2004 10:30:14 PM)

this slaves Master used a publishing company, but she can't remember the exact name but will ask Him tomorrow night and post it for Y/you here so Y/you can try them and see what they say. Master's book is getting published and should hopefully be on the shelves within the next year or two.

Thanks, Gloria and cariad!

I'd appreciate any leads you have!
