DaddysInkedSlut -> brands (5/16/2010 1:06:17 PM)

I have gotten tattoos in the past and am addicted to ink, however; I am strongly considering getting a brand. I am wondering if you have had one or know someone who has had one in the past how it compared to a tattoo. What should I be prepared for as far as pain, aftercare, risks?

Hi DaddysInkedSlut, My partner is a scarification artist and different types of branding is one of the things he does.
You can be branded in various ways. Hot strike with thin molded steel, Snake bite and cell popping (which are also a form of hot strike. You can also be branded with a cauterizing pen but this only produces a second degree burn, which won't permanently scar and can be very painful.

There are certain things you need to remember with hot strike branding. The metal needs to be red hot (glowing red) because only this will produce a 3rd degree burn and only a 3rd degree burn will permanently scar. The reason cell popping isn't permanent is because its minute particles of skin being burnt off and this leaves the body the ability to heel without leaving a scar. Saying that, some people are permanently scarred from cell popping.

Don't go for a brand on your fatty bits. Avoid places like the ass, belly and thighs as scars tend to blow in these areas. Shoulders, arms, calfs and lean muscular areas tend to brand well and keep there definition.

Burns grow 3 times in width, sometimes more and so don't go using metal that is any thicker than 0.3mm and don't go making some elaborate pattern because brands tend to lose definition. Keep it simple.

Steve always makes appointments with people a good month ahead. They need to be in good health because all scarification (including tats) can knock the immune system. Its a good idea to take multi vitamins a month before and a month after.

I have been branded with both the snake bite and normal hot strike and I found it slightly uncomfortable but certainly not painful. It feels like someone has nipped your skin and then a very deep itch. Its interesting watching Steve branding people. No matter what you tell them about it not being very painful, they will always break out in a sweat before it happens. The brand hits their skin and you see their face light up and say something like 'oh is that it?'
People that tell you its painful are those that have received 2nd degree burns and not 3rd degree and second degree burns are extremely painful. Dont go to a branding artist if he tells you its going to be really painful. Anyone can set themselves up as a professional. That doesn't mean they understand what they are doing. Go to places like BME and get recommendations. Some of the best and safest artists I know are not professionals.

I could talk all day about branding but I won't. We have a website www.edgeplay.co.uk and there is a good article on there about branding aftercare. Its worth a read.

Lots of people will tell you your mad, that its dangerous bla bla bla. Its not dangerous if done properly. Just consider things carefully. Spend time doing your research and know that if you don't like it after its done, you have to live with it. A brand is not like a tattoo, in that you don't know the exact outcome until after its healed.

All the best

Maria

Thank you very much for the information. I have a freind who has several brands and they are beautiful. That is actually what got me thinking about it.

is there any way to add colour to the scaring/brands when they have healed? would the scar tissue hold the colouring? i have always thought about a brand as something like a 3d tatt.

allthatjaz -> RE: brands (5/17/2010 1:02:04 AM)

I have had a healed brand white inked and so far it has held its color well. A lot of tat artists don't want to ink a scar and so its better to go with recommendation. I will say, having a tattoo over a brand is very painful.

I have gotten a Sub branded by a qualified body modifier at his request.

It was a hot strike branding where a 2 inch by 2 inch by 1/4 thick piece of steel was heated until it was cherry red  and the very edge was pressed against his skin, pulled away, re-heated and re-applied to follow a desired pattern.

Cooling was needed, along with  pain relief, even for a dedicated pain slut like my boy.
Sleeping on his belly (his branding was on his back) and liberal application of Aloe, straight from the plant with a fan blowing directly onto him.

The resulting scarification wasn't tattooed at all.

It healed to a shiny, smooth, pink, raised scars.
More subtle than ordinary tattoos but none the less very visible when he took his shirt off.
We got asked more than a few questions at several surf beaches we frequented where Ink was very common place.
Branding seems to be the new bench mark and my Sub got huge kudos for being a hard arse. (which really wasn't his motivation at all.  LOL)
