I am having one next week.  If you have had one, please advise, is this likely to make my throat hurt for days, or is it a temporary thing?  The hardest part will be no food or drink after midnight, and the procedure is not until 1:30pm

You are having an upper GI done? It is painless and you will be knocked out during the procedure. I had one back a few years ago because I had mysterious bleeding in my throat. Come to find out it was doritos making small cuts in the feeding tube, so I knock them out of my diet.

Yes, upper GI.  It is in an effort to reach a dx, I do not believe there is anything seriously wrong with me, beyond having a skittish GI tract.  I have made a ton of changes in my diet and feel well at this point.  But the Gastroenterologist wants to take a peak at things to be sure

It really isn't a big deal and as Shahar said they give you good drugs that knock you out so you won't be aware of a thing. I do agree the fasting sucks but on the whole the procedure itself is no biggie.

I remain vile; my GI tract went haywire.  I blame the 50's (not the decade; the turning of).

Seems to me an out of control GI tract would only increase your vileness!

relax Jefffffffff...i had one and am as vile as ever, so no doubt Katie will not change much either.

Katie...try to relax. Be honest about your gag reflex with the anesthetist. I have extreme difficulty having something as stupid as a throat culture (i actually have to take the swab and do it myself). As a result, i was knocked out completely.
The only side effect was a little sore throat and a huge desire for ice water.

Might I recommend "Jeff's Two Ball Lotion"? It has been known to soothe a sore throat.

katy, this may sound odd, but have you seen a chiropractor?  My back tenses up over time, and it happens to pinch on the nerves controlling my digestion.  A few times a year, i go to a chiropractor and my GI tract gets much better.

And dibs on you before Jeffff gets ya.

I had one done many years ago, it wasn't nearly as bad as the lower GI. I just stayed up and slept until just before I had to go to deal with the eating thing and I don't recall the throat irritation lasting for long. I do remember them telling me to eat icecream and jello and soup...I looked at the nurse and said, if I could eat icecream do you think I would be doing this? [8D]

[:D]  Trust me, I feel like I have an 80 year old stomach.  But I feel so much better than I did 6 months ago.

yeah I've had problems since I was 10, most likely hereditary...you're luckier than you think! It sucks though, having to really watch everything you eat and drink. Believe me, we really have no idea what's in most of the food that's processed nor do the vast majority of the wait staff in the USA. [8D]
