Whining Wing Nut has a better ring for me than Crying Conservative.

How Glenn Beck Re-Invented Himself as a Crying Conservative

Glenn Beck's strange TV: Mormon masterpiece theater.
May 6, 2010 |

The following is an adapted excerpt from Alexander Zaitchik's book, Common Nonsense: Glenn Beck and the Triumph of Ignorance, due out this month on Wiley & Sons.

This is not an accident. As they were always intended to do, Beck’s tears have become a distinctive corporate-brand handle. They mark him clearly from everyone else in the broadcasting industry. When Beck began his career in conservative commentary, the field was thick with tough-guy know-it-alls—from the lace-curtain boor O’Reilly to the cigar-chomping blowhard Limbaugh.

Then there is the July 2009 GQ photo shoot in which Beck applied Tiger Balm to activate his famous tear ducts. It was from this shoot that the image for his September 2009 Time cover was drawn. Beck now uses the image as the screen saver on his office computers.

“It is not whether you really cry,” Ingrid Bergman once said. “It’s whether the audience thinks you are crying.” In Beck’s case, it’s not whether you really cry. It’s whether people are talking about whether you are really crying.

Making a joke of his tears, as he does, is not the same as copping to emotional dishonesty. Beck bristles whenever his tears are used not as joke material but as evidence of a larger, deeper fraudulence. Admitting that he is a charlatan is one bridge that Beck cannot afford to cross, even if his denials often serve to confirm the obvious. “I’m a crybaby. I’m such an easy target. I’m surprised SNL [Saturday Night Live] hasn’t come after me,” Beck once told a reporter.

Skousen started all this NWO - New World Order - conspiracy theory stuff some people believe. It's nice to know where all this crazy stuff came from.

Meet the man who changed Glenn Beck's life

Cleon Skousen was a right-wing crank whom even conservatives despised. Then Beck discovered him
As Beck knows, to focus solely on "The 5,000 Year Leap" is to sell the author short. When he died in 2006 at the age of 92, Skousen had authored more than a dozen books and pamphlets on the Red Menace, New World Order conspiracy, Christian child rearing, and Mormon end-times prophecy. It is a body of work that does much to explain Glenn Beck's bizarre conspiratorial mash-up of recent months, which decries a new darkness at noon and finds strange symbols carefully coded in the retired lobby art of Rockefeller Center. It also suggests that the modern base of the Republican Party is headed to a very strange place.

Skousen laid low for much of the '60s. But he reemerged at the end of the decade peddling a new and improved conspiracy that merged left with right: the global capitalist mega-plot of the "dynastic rich." Families like the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds, Skousen now believed, used left forces -- from Ho Chi Minh to the American civil rights movement -- to serve their own power.

I think the huge popularity of people like  G. Beck, Limbaugh, M.Savage, Lou Dobbs  is based on their honesty. They do believe what they preach.
This, of course, puts the opponents into bad position. They are weak, unable to compete in the open. So, they write books in their basement. Does anybody really read/buy these?

I can't believe someone has gone to the lengths of writing a book about Glen Beck.

What next? "Major Garrett: is that Whitehouse real behind him or is it just another similar looking building with a garden?"

These are the questions we need answering.

I think I'm going to write a book about whether or not my mother was lying about the tooth fairy. Yep.

I wonder how you know this is true.

I think these are the criteria for a successful one man talk show. If it was not true they would have been eliminated long time ago because of the lack of listeners. PS. I am not saying I share all their views.

domiguy -> RE: How Glenn Beck Re-Invented Himself as a Crying Conservative (5/23/2010 12:21:27 PM)

Their honesty?...They are merely opportunists.

Musicmystery -> RE: How Glenn Beck Re-Invented Himself as a Crying Conservative (5/23/2010 12:23:14 PM)

Nonsense. The criteria for a successful one man talk show, from Howard Stern to Rush Limbaugh, is to keep it controversial and edgy. It keeps viewers/listeners, friendly or not.

If you want reasoned discussion of the issues of the day, turn to PBS, NPR, or local cable shows. That's not what one man talk shows do. Or try to do, except in the minds of their sheep.

Before Beck moved to Fox News he had a show on CNN-HN. On that show he went into daily paroxysms about the coming of the Muslim terrorists and how we had to defend our shores. Same shit now, different enemy, although his middle name is Hussein. Never bitched about socialism then. Face it, Beck is a phony and an opportunist. Nah, let me be more specific, he is a whore who will give blow jobs to order.... but a sly and rich whore [:D]

Well it certainly describes you better than anything I have seen in a while. Are you going to have t-shirts made up?
