switch2please -> gaining weight (5/25/2010 1:36:15 PM)

I know it's an unusual request, but does anyone have any advice on gaining weight?

I was very sick for about ten days last month (couldn't get out of bed, couldn't eat much, very high fever - B almost took me to the hospital) and lost about ten pounds. I was already a bit thin so I'm currently underweight for my size and I'd like to get back to a healthy weight.
I live a fairly active lifestyle I suppose, but I've been making an effort to eat more and after a month my pants are still loose and I have to wear a belt every day. It's possible with my freak-of-nature metabolism that it'll just take a while, but I'm seeking advice just in case. The chocolate cake cure doesn't seem to be working  :)

Ice cream always does it for me.

Lots of starchy food might work better than ice cream or chocolate cake (though I can't imagine either hurting). Have you tried loading up on pasta?

switch2please -> RE: gaining weight (5/25/2010 2:18:37 PM)

I don't eat pasta very often. I'll try it, thanks :)
Gnocchi and pesto with tomatoes...mmmmm...

Unhealthy choices include cheesecake and pizza.
Fruit juice is pretty calorie dense.

Here is a list of fairly healthy calorie dense foods:

I usually eat pretty healthy, so this is perfect! Thanks!

If your healthy and your doctor says your ok don't worry about it. Your weight will come back to normal soon enough.

Continue exercising and eating the same as you always do and your weight will reequilibrate right where it was.

Switching to full fat milk might start you gaining weight as well as wreaking havoc with your blood cholesterol levels.

invizableman -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 2:14:01 AM)

Beer does it for me. That isn't healthy of course. Maybe if the pretzels were unsalted, IDK.

Seriously, if it was from a sickness, like was mentioned, you will get back to your point. Try lifting some weights and take in a little more protein, that may help accelerate things a bit.

barelynangel -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 5:18:51 AM)

Try adding protein shakes to your diet twice a day.

MistressRoux -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 8:18:55 AM)

Don't eat crap. You will eventually gain it back. Don't force so much. To help the process a bit, try adding healthy, calorie dense foods into your diet. Nuts, avocado and fatty fish are a good idea. Do NOT cut back on physical activity. That is not a good way to gain plus it probably wouldn't work. Add an extra meal.

Please don't eat garbage to gain weight. Going with the above will leave you healthier with shinier hair and healthier skin. Stuffing your face with chocolate cake and processed foods will leave you with low energy, pimples and cellulite.

I very rarely eat processed foods and have no intention of increasing that amount to gain weight - as you said, it's crap. The only thing I buy that comes in a box is milk. AngelikaJ posted a link to a list of healthy calorie-dense foods and since I tend to eat small portions I think this will help. I don't eat much meat so I already drink a protein shake, and I have no intention of giving up my chocolate :) but everything in moderation.

The 'chocolate cake cure' was kind of a joke - I went to dinner with the boyfriend recently and we split dessert, which he divided into three pieces: one for him, one for me, and one for my butt, which apparently got smaller when I lost weight. We ended up bringing half of it home, and it took me a week to finish it.

I am a bit impatient to get back to a healthy weight, but I know it'll take some time. *sigh* I guess I'm stuck wearing belts every day for a while.

I'll bet she doesn't have a mustache either.

youngsubgeoff -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 12:49:16 PM)

if you want to put on healthy weight, I recommend a shitload of protien. Then hit the gym. Then more protien, about 1 grahm for every pound you weigh. For example, Im at 235lbs right now, so if I want to pack on muscle, I need to eat about 235 grahms of protien every day.

Jeffff -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 1:02:28 PM)

A few years ago I went to GNC. They had a two for one deal on.." Weight Gainer 6000"

For 6 weeks my caloric intake was between 5000 and 7000 per day.

At the end of 6 weeks I had gained...... 3 lbs.

Not everyone can gain weight just because they want too.

Also.. I have a rather shitty mustache

Lockit -> RE: gaining weight (5/26/2010 1:33:01 PM)

Twice I was so sick I got down to 78 pounds as an adult. I found nothing but eating all day and time that worked for me. I ate at least 400 calories before bed, more if I knew I was going to be working it off. I started out slowly building up to eating larger portions, but I ate every hour. All to get to my typical weight of 90-95 pounds. I had tried to gain from my normal weight and used all sorts of methods, but nothing worked. Maybe because I worked it off with all I did in a day.

Other than that, the only time I could gain weight was by getting pregnant or old and having a thyroid go off. Now I long for the days of my 90-95 pounds and no ass!
