On another thread in this section someone related about a breast binding that went very wrong and caused part of her breast to die, requiring surgery.

I have been thinking about this for a couple of days.
In what it is that we do (IWIITWD for short) accidents happen.... mishaps, mistakes and unfortunately even intentional harm.

Accidents happen among novices but also with the experienced.

Ideally, everyone tries for accident prevention first and foremost.

What I am hoping for is a discussion of the things that went wrong, and if in hindsight they could have been prevented.

And also, is the level of follow through the same or different depending on the type and depth of relationship the partners have as well as chemistry etc.

Most of the time when you hear about things like this, its because the "dominant" has no experience and isn't aware of the risks involved. Not only can this be dangerous and extremely hazardous to your partners health, but rarely are these people aware of how to respond in an emergency.

The biggest key is listening to your partner, your body has a wonderful response mechanism build it and will communicate with your body. However, that's only half of the equation, but if you carefully communicate with your submissive, understand the risks and what to look for, the risks involved can be greatly reduced.

**One of the biggest things I see people, especially newbies forget is to properly steralise equipment after each use.**

take an EMR course and have well stocked first aid kit seems like a good start to me.

and don't just count on the bottom to say when to stop. when in sub-space or pursuing their high, they may lie to prolong the experience...

What is the most important to me is having a top that listens to me and knows what to look for when someone is in distress.

There have been a few times that I’ve had to be unbound because the ropes were too tight, or because they’ve started to rub against one of my bones. All I had to do is tell the top and they were fine removing them.

While suspended, I tend to float out of my head immediately so it’s important for the top to check on me frequently. Also, it’s important for them to know how long someone can reasonably hang and spin because I’m so out of it I could stay up there too long and not realize it until I’m completely sick.

The best advice I can give is know who you’re playing with, and if you don’t know them well…play in public so a DM or someone else can step in if something starts unraveling.

Also… be wary of the top/Dom that isn’t open to education from someone in the community….I would not be a guinea pig for someone new trying something dangerous for the first time---without someone experienced there.

Just my thoughts.

Any regular household kit should do.....

unless you are delving into situations like the needle scene in 'pulp fiction' lol, anything above that and you may as well do your kink in the parking lot of your local emergency department just in case.

If you aren;t doing anything edgy it is unlikely that anything that bad will happen. If you are doing edge stuff, then you need to know what you're doing and the sub needs to know that you've learned how to do this. If she didn't ask, then she shares responsibility.

legally, in Canada at least, one can not consent to act of assault cause bodily harm or aggravated assault. So if your pushing the boundaries of safety too far, the liability lies only on the Top. Accidents of course do not count, but negligence (crim negli body harm or cause death) is not an excuse, and again brings the top into sole liability.
So you, as a Top, better take all reasonable steps to avoid causing severe injury.

Interesting because in the UK the law says we it is illegal to consent to pain. If someone was injured during a BDSM act then both the top and the bottom are equally liable.
