I watched an interview with the author of the bio on Mrs. Lacks, it's a fascinating story.

quote:

Somewhere in the humble family cemetery off a country road in the town of Clover in southern Virginia, a woman who died nearly 60 years ago lies in an unmarked grave.

It is a shame, because the world should know her name: Henrietta Lacks.

She was a poor, African-American tobacco farmer, a mother of five children, who died of cervical cancer when she was 31.

She was also, says Rebecca Skloot, one of the most important unknown figures in medicine, "and she had no idea."

I know. Everyone who has studied biology or medicine knows her name. There have also been one or more television documentaries about her. Sometimes, though, her cells are a pest, infecting and supplanting other cell cultures.

Cool story, though I think Johns Hopkins should give her kids free medical

She finally has a headstone:

Her family deserves far more from the rest of humanity simply as payment for all the suffering HeLa cells have prevented.

I'm glad she at least has the headstone [:)] What a strange and amazing world we live in.
