Germans look very serious this time round.

What do ya mean "this time round" [>:]

They better take it serious this time after they screwed it up last time....last time it was to read in their faces that they were mentally already in the upcoming penalty shoot out...at which moment italy used the chance and defeated them, so that penalty shoot out then wasn't necessary anymore...so they better make sure to stay focused on reality instead of daydreaming what might going to happen [>:]

North Korea play Brazil today. North Korea will be destroyed. Let us spare a thought for the players and their families as the first of ten goals goes in.

& Portugal & Ivory Coast to come. Group of death?

LadyEllen -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/15/2010 10:59:59 AM)

Indeed.

Although, one of the consequences of the recent escalation between N and S Korea has been that S Korea switched off the transmission of satellite TV to the north, removing at a stroke any chance for those in the north to see their team in action.

This is potentially good news for the N Korean team in that it wouldnt be at all a surprise if Kim Il Nutjob were to tell his people that N Korea had won the world cup; no one in the north would have any evidence to the contrary even if they were sufficiently daring to doubt it.

Almost the entire world supporting North Korea for a few minutes, funny thing football.

And didnt they do well!? And youre right - I was certainly cheering them on. A masterclass on how to stop the top teams through solid defending that only came apart twice and then only due to incredible skill for the first goal and incredible movement and through pass for the second.

Everytime I read that phrase I hear it in his voice. Haven't watched any shows with him in for 20 years, but still...

I did think the same thing DC but decided against an explanation of the reference owing to the colonial membership on whom he should be as lost as he is annoying to us

Germany - Serbia

0  :  1   !!!
We defeated them, even though they had a penalty kick, which they didn't turn into a goal.

Bravo, Serbia !!!

calamitysandra -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/18/2010 12:18:52 PM)

It was a well deserved win too. That was some bad kicking our boys did. Gah!

LadyEllen -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/19/2010 4:18:01 AM)

Indeed, that Germany lost to Serbia (and that France got well beaten by Mexico the other day) is the only consolation for most England supporters today after a dismal showing against Algeria whom, on paper at least, we ought to have beaten by at least 3 clear goals. England 0 Algeria 0 is just awful, especially when Algeria outplayed England by some margin. England left the field to a chorus of boos from the fans.

However, given that Germany is my second team the defeat to Serbia is also bad news. I am now in two minds - do I leave the England flag up or do I get the Germany flag prepared, or should I simply give up on the both of them?

Meanwhile congrats to the USA (told you all not to write them off) - coming back from 2-0 down for a draw (should have been a 2-3 victory but for a disallowed goal that was OK) against Slovenia.

I notice that there is little comment about England's failure last night, something which interviewed fans after the game  voiced clearly, the England players are simply not hungry enough, it is all down to money, the playing for your country thing has died a death. Maybe football in the UK is dying what with massive club debt and prima donna players and their salaries. At one time it was considered an honour to play for one's own country, financial reward was never even thought about.

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/19/2010 4:36:10 AM)

Well it isn't going to get any better now their supporters arn't even behind them.

Aneirin -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/19/2010 4:44:12 AM)

This morning I have noticed a deficit of England flags, for some have been taken down obviously in disgust, even some of those attached to cars have found themselves in the gutter at the side of the road.

In general I don't follow football that much, it was just that I did see that particular game (on top of a few more) 4 years ago and I was proud of the other country as it was obvious that our team was with their mind already at the upcoming penalty shoot out...therefore that then the other team used their chance and defeated them due to them not being focused was fair enough [:)]

As much as I enjoy it when they win (and after seeing a videoclip here yesterday where Klinsmann called back the memories from the win 20 years ago, asking "do you know where you have been 20 years ago" yep, I do remember the scenes at home after their win and know where I have been) I do not deny it when another team was better and last time it was absolutely deserved that the other team kicked them out in last moments of the game.

Regarding yesterday...well, didn't see the brazil goal, but hope that yesterday was just "to safe their energy" for future games in regards to Germanys performance [>:][8|]

SL4V3M4YB3 -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/19/2010 4:48:10 AM)

Yep I never really understood that car flag thing.

Are the players actually going to be aware of those flags, if there was a time for it then it was before they left.

Someone has been making a tidy profit selling tat.

In other news anti English merchandise has been banned from HMV in Scotland and Wales, which seems a bit of an over the top reaction.

NorthernGent -> RE: 2010 Football World Cup. (6/19/2010 4:49:38 AM)

Absolute garbage.....no heart in them.....over a £100k a week gets you that?!

Doesn't help when the manager has us set up to play a continental style game. It doesn't work us....we're not continentals...different culture and different style of football. England are at our best when we're playing a typically English game.....high tempo....getting in the opposition's face.....and not giving them a minute's peace on the ball.....and once we've won the ball getting it forward quickly. Not fannying around Italian style.

And....he's picking the wrong players.... Joe Cole should be playing...he has done it before with England......Defoe is the best finisher in England....very quick....and lethal in the box.....but yet he persists with Heskey! Madness.

Thing is.......the draw has really opened up for England....another wasted opportunity. People are assuming we'll get it together against Slovenia....but I'm struggling to see how.....struggling for confidence.....picking players out of form and not good enough anyway...such as Lennon.....can't see where a decent performance is coming from.
