you're entitled to your viewpoint of course, but i've never felt that someone simply being of the same race as myself as having anything significant "in common," any more than you and i have anything significant in common by both being female.
Perhaps instead of race, ethnicity would be a better term...
I do not have lots in common with everyone that is my ethnicity, but it is one of the things that forms common ground between people. I like having common experiences as someone I am involved with. It is why age is a biggie for me, and I increasingly am drawn to men in my age group... they watched the same cartoons I did when I was little, they listened to some of the same music in high school. They remember when parachute pants were in style.
Ethnic background, geography, age, language, educational background, and even socio economics can all provide a sense of common ground. Not everyone cares about that, but many people do
