I am just wondering here, this oil that is coming up on the shoreline of the states bordering the gulf, is this the US's first experience of oil coming ashore ?

No, there was a major spill off Santa Barbara about 40 years ago, and the Exxon Valdez spill in Alaska 20 years ago. A big one off of Massachusetts in the 70s, and a big one in Maryland in the 50s. This is by far the biggest, but not the first. Usually, however, we're careful to have our accidents on other countries' beaches.

I was just wondering if this oil situation is effecting those in Mexico and who is dealing with that? Can't seem to find any news of this, I guess it depends on the tide or the media tide.

When it gets to Mexico the illegals in the US can go home to clean up their beaches. BP will pay them.

I believe the Gulf currents take the oil along the southern Gulf coast...along and around Florida then up the east coast given time. The only way Mexico would get oil would be storm driven and then only temporary.

In fact I'll bet there is a boon on shrimping off the west Texas coast because of the spill.

Ixtok (sp?) in 1979 dumped about 140 million gallons, lots of which ended up on the Texas shore. Hard to find any evidence of it now, which I guess is a good argument for the fact that oil is biological and nature can take care of herself better than we think, but from the stories I've read from that time, it sure was a mess and screwed up the livelihood of a lot of people.

Actually...There were several oil tankers torpedoed off the East Coast during WWII...The oil washed ashore...But for some strange reason there were all kinds of Beach party movies during the 1950's.

Obviously Frankie Avalon was in league with Joe McCarthy to stage a right wing Beach Party Propaganda campaign to hide from the public the vast oil polluted waste land that was the Post War American East Coast.

221 American Merchant Marine Ships were sunk off the American East Coast and in the Gulf of Mexico During WWII. This does not count Ships under foreign flag sunk in those waters. Thats just American Merchant marine ships.

Well that or American Environmentalists exaggerate the long term damage of oil spills. for their personal and political gain.

860 Oil tankers were sunk during WWII. Give or take a couple. Around 3000 other ships were sunk, Almost all carrying substantial quantities of oil. Over 13 million tons of shipping went to the bottom during a 6 year period... Almost all of it hemorrhaging oil.

We spilled so much oil in the sea of Japan in 1944 I can't see how there's a sea turtle or a sea bird left in Asia, but strangely they'r all still around. The only thing that went extinct was Japanese Militarism for the next 70 years or so.
