Nixon "isn't even close"?

There you go, folks. Partisanship isn't going to get any blinder than that.

Not at all. This is just silly. Roll and point if it pleases you.

First, "why didn't Obama do anything about BP," then comparing this to Nixon's criminal activity and overt admission that he thought himself above the law, legally?

Not to mention you're cherry picking, and rather bizarrely, from my much wider, non-partisan observation about the thread--obstructionism.

The wider point I'd make is that obstructionism is hurting the U.S.

Deliberately holding up appointees, for example, as has happened over the past few administrations, over matters not even related to the appointee, is indefensible. Someone is going to have to step in to change the rules.

But more generally, used to be, decades ago, people sat down with the opposition and worked out compromises. Now the feeling is that if an opposing view didn't win, the problem was we didn't oppose strictly enough.

It has become about power at all costs. Even the justice system has become overtly politicized over the past decade. The only check is the American people (remember the permanent Republican majority?), but even here, the trend is toward not saner government, but toward opposition of government--essentially a desire for mob rule. Just look at the rhetoric in many threads here.

Will it change? Not in November, however the elections go--that will only change the names on the same old patterns.

1. You raised Nixon being above the law. Nothing Nixon did came close to being as illegal and as potentially costly to the US as his strongarming of BP.
2. the Dems brought obstructionism to new heights during GWBs administration. To have a thread about Republican obstructionism is the height of absurdity.

Musicmystery -> RE: Obama: Republican Obstructionism Hurts U.S. - CBS News (6/20/2010 4:09:38 PM)

1. I raised Nixon whining.
2. Someone else started the Rep angle--I posted about a common problem.
3. You brought it back to partisanship. Well done. Nixon Saint. Obama Devil. Got it. Writing it down.

ROFL. given Obamas illegal strongarming of BP this isnt even close

Illegal strong arming of BP because they negotiated an agreement to compensate the people hurt by the spill?

What exactly was illegal and why was the agreement a bad thing?

What do you think was "negotiated". LMAO.

Its a bad thing because investments in US companies have thrived because we were viewed as a nation of laws, where one despot doesnt have the ability to exceed his authority to punish whoever the fuck he feels like punishing. As Blowboy continues down the path of de facto socialism every company's financing will suffer, not just the his villain of the day.

What was negotiated was a fund to cover the economic damages of individuals and businesses affected by the spill.

What was negotiated was a $20 billion settlement that will keep many of those small businesses from failing.

What was negotiated was a way to avoid a long Congressional battle over raising the liability cap that was a ridiculously low amount to provide an immediate source to compensate those victims.

So I'll ask again, other than your juvenile Blowboy remarks, do you see any valid reason for not making BP pay for the economic damage their spill has done?

Or do you need some time to go listen to Rush so he can tell you what you think?

No kidding?

Then I guess he resigned and had to be pardoned to avoid prosecution all because of an elaborate misunderstanding.

Which then brings us again to exactly what your sophisticated legal mind finds to be illegal in the BP agreement.

It is not obstruction to me. It is just members from different parties with different points of veiw. It has been this way since this country was founded.

Yes I agree, but when it gets to the point that nothing is accomplished because Republicans are adhering to lockstep party line opposition then something is wrong.

You have people being pressured to vote for the party's position rather than what they believe is right.

Just look at cap-and-trade.

Regardless of what you think of the merits, don't you find it a little strange that this was a Republican idea with heavy Republican support that now has turned into opposition since Obama promoted the same idea?

servantforuse -> RE: Obama: Republican Obstructionism Hurts U.S. - CBS News (6/21/2010 6:39:01 AM)

Cap and trade will put a hugh financial burdon on businesses and consumers. That is why republicans are against it, not because someone is telling them how to vote.
