Mince and Tatties. My Mom is Scottish and this is a traditional Scottish dish. It was our absolute favorite comfort food as children and still is. Two generations later and my neice still requests it as he birthday dinner. It sounds yucky when described, but it is delicious. It's browned hamburger simmered in a gravy, and mashed potatoes . My Mom always chopped up carrots and added that to the mince. You put the hamburger < mince > over the potaoes < tatties> and enjoy. mbmbn

Pumpkin pie... for breakfast. I used to love cinnamon bread in a bowl of milk, but now I can't have milk... so......... I'll tell you... Diner food. I always seek out a diner. I just love the atmosphere as much as the simple goodness of a western breakfast. best, sunshine

erin: When my Mom was feeling " fancy ", she would strain the gravy off the mince and mix the mince up with the tatties. She would then make a pie crust and fill the pie with it and bake. The gravy was saved and used to pour over the pie. Leftovers are good heated up. [:D] mbmbn

cottage pie. i was lucky to have tried Gordon Ramsey's cottage pie when i still lived in London. it was quite awesome, but i like mine better because i use ground sirloin which has a HEAVENLY fat/meat balence. i also don't drain the fat(i know, shame on me, but i dont eat it often) and i stir in creole brown gravy mix instead of adding milk or water. its a soul orgasm.

And yes, milk toast is the best. Homemade chicken soup with matzo balls. But since I can't buy soup chickens anymore, I start with canned broth instead.

Homemade mac and cheese. Grilled cheese on potato bread with tomato soup. Pasta fagioli My mom's spaghetti sauce with a loaf of good crusty Italian bread for dipping.

It is called Brown Sauce (to distinguish it from Red Sauce, which is made with tomatoes and goes over noodles) in our house. We eat it over mashed potatoes, or rice. Belongs among the kids favourites. Seems to be a quite universal dish.

Chicken and dumplins, homemade, rolled out on the counter. Heaven on earth. PB&J sandwich, with strawberry jam on that evil white bread, and a big glass of milk. I think I just decided what to do with the chicken I have thawing in the fridge.
