Mince and Tatties.  My Mom is Scottish and this is a traditional Scottish dish. It was our absolute favorite comfort food as children and still is. Two generations later and my neice still requests it as he birthday dinner.

It sounds yucky when described, but it is delicious. It's browned hamburger simmered in a gravy, and mashed potatoes . My Mom always chopped up carrots and added that to the mince. You put the hamburger < mince > over the potaoes < tatties> and enjoy.

Pumpkin pie... for breakfast.

I used to love cinnamon bread in a bowl of milk, but now I can't have milk... so.........

I'll tell you... Diner food. I always seek out a diner. I just love the atmosphere as much as the simple goodness of a western breakfast.

best,
sunshine

I almost listed this myself! We called it "Slop". My ex knew it as "Hamburg Gravy". Definite comfort food.

Sunshine,

If you spent much time in the kitchen of a diner I don't know if you would feel the same way!

When my Mom was feeling " fancy ", she would strain the gravy off the mince and mix the mince up with the tatties. She would then make a pie crust and fill the pie with it and bake. The gravy was saved and used to pour over the pie. Leftovers are good heated up. [:D]

cottage pie. i was lucky to have tried Gordon Ramsey's cottage pie when i still lived in London. it was quite awesome, but i like mine better because i use ground sirloin which has a HEAVENLY fat/meat balence. i also don't drain the fat(i know, shame on me, but i dont eat it often) and i stir in creole brown gravy mix instead of adding milk or water. its a soul orgasm.

Milk toast. Alas I also can't tolerate milk anymore either. And yes, milk toast is the best.

Homemade chicken soup with matzo balls. But since I can't buy soup chickens anymore, I start with canned broth instead.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 1:06:32 PM)

Homemade mac and cheese.
Grilled cheese on potato bread with tomato soup.
Pasta fagioli
My mom's spaghetti sauce with a loaf of good crusty Italian bread for dipping.

Aileen1968 -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 1:14:51 PM)

Ohh... forgot one.
Anteater testicles Fondue.

It is called Brown Sauce (to distinguish it from Red Sauce, which is made with tomatoes and goes over noodles) in our house. We eat it over mashed potatoes, or rice. Belongs among the kids favourites.

Seems to be a quite universal dish.

JstAnotherSub -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 3:01:36 PM)

Chicken and dumplins, homemade, rolled out on the counter.  Heaven on earth.

PB&J sandwich, with strawberry jam on that evil white bread, and a big glass of milk.

I think I just decided what to do with the chicken I have thawing in the fridge.

kallisto -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 5:39:46 PM)

I'm a southern girl. There's something about breakfast at night that just seems to take away the day's "what ails ya" ... bacon, eggs, and grits.

tazzygirl -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 5:40:43 PM)

omg... im coming to your house for dinner!

slaveluci -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 5:46:14 PM)

Macaroni and Cheese
Sausage and Biscuits
Yeast Rolls
Homemade Pinto Beans and Cornbread
No Bake Cookies (oatmeal)

All sooooo comforting and yummy[:)]

This was known as "brown stuff" in my house. Not really on my comfort food list, but I made it for the little brothers often enough that they think of it that way. For me, it was a box of Kraft Mac n' cheese with a can of tuna mixed in. These days, it's a rare steak with a big, buttery baked potato.

It was called "graveyard stew" by my okie mother.... and I wouldn't eat it when I was a kid because she called it that...

My dad called it "shit on a shingle"... again... not an appetizing name

kiwisub12 -> RE: Comfort Food (6/21/2010 6:07:29 PM)

Homemade mac'cheese
My mums roast mutton with mint sauce and crispy roasted potatoes, and green peas fresh from the garden

In my house that was either ground beef or chipped beef in milk gravy served over toast. SOS for short and called that so everyone would eat it.
