Notable exits:

France- miserable disintergration of what should be a decent team, looking at the French puts our (English) lacklustre performance into context. We've already beaten the French at least.

Italy- defending champions knocked out before the knock out, italians defending awfully. We can claim to have defeated the current champions, which sounds good at least.

Switzerland - beat hot favourites Spain, then went on to stumble vs Honduras, good example of any team being able to beat any other team on the day.

New Zealand - so minor a footballing power they had to go through exrta qualifying even after gaining their confederations single place, go home undefeated, which is nice for them.

South Africa - hosts going out, but didn't do that badly, managed to beat france...

Predictions anyone?

Just goes to show that there is no guarantee that a side will go through to the next round. I do admit to a certain amount of gloating that France is out. I've never forgotten that bastard Barthez for being made of rubber lol

I have to admit that i cant keep all the scoring possibilities for advancement straight. If Team X gets this many goals, and Team Y wins, then Team A has to lose and Team C has to tie.... ect ect ect. I enjoy the sport. The scoring gives me a headache.

DCWoody -> RE: The Last 16 (6/26/2010 5:26:52 AM)

It's straight knock-out from now on. Win and you go through, lose and you're out. Draw and you keep playing for another half an hour. If it's still a draw after that we give the players swords, and replace the ball with a ferocious honey badger.

Shock of the round could come from the Brazil or Argentina game....Chile and Mexico are both decent teams...and one of them could cause a surprise.

The Portugal/Spain game will be a good 'un.

England? Fuck knows. Depends which England turns up. And they haven't half made a bollocks of it.....could have been a clear run to the semis. The only real positive from this is that Brazil are in the other half of the draw...and while Argentina are good going forward they look all over the shop at the back.

As it stands...it looks like England will have to beat Germany and Argentina to reach the Semis....and I can't see that happening.

Watched the Spain/Chile match last night and Spain didn't look that good....and with Torres struggling they suddenly don't look like favourites.

If we play well, we'll win. I'd back 'England playing well' against anyone on our side of the show. Thing is, we may well not play well. Bet the Germans do.
Netherlands vs Brazil to decide ultimate winner?

Arpig -> RE: The Last 16 (6/26/2010 10:09:16 AM)

Well since I was born there...I am going to root for Japan...luckily I don't really like soccer/football so it doesn't matter when they are eliminated...but if they do win, then remember who said it first[:D][:D][:D]

What is 'England playing well'? When was the last time the national team performed like they do for their clubs?

I don't see it....tell you why....

Gareth Barry...too many stray passes...means we're giving the ball awat cheaply and spending too much time chasing it.....

Frank Lampard....doesn't reproduce his Chelsea form for England....

You need two solid lads in the middle of the pitch and we don't have that.....

I'd make Brazil favourites...they look like they have the right balance...although you're right in that Holland are a decent outside bet....

"When was the last time the national team performed like they do for their clubs?"

Aye, that's why I'm worried.

Damn good game just ended, usaicans gone.

Politesub53 -> RE: The Last 16 (6/26/2010 3:47:28 PM)

The last time I recall them playing really well was in the Euro 96. Ince bottled taking the sixth penalty and left it to Southgate, who went on to do Pizza adds.

In the 2002 World cup we went out to Brazil in the quarter finals, having beaten Argentina in the group stage. In 2006 we again went out in the quarter finals on penalties, this time to Portugal. We seem to freeze for the knockout stages for some reason.

Personally, I am not so sure about statistics from the club, so my copy and paste can potentially be wrong, but in a chat forum today (one of the ones where people can have their say underneath a news article), someone said:

"England-
1 world cup win on home soil and 1 semi final place
Euro champs 1 time semi final place

Germany -
3 world cup wins, 4 times runner up and 11 times semi finalist.
3 Euro champs wins, 3 times runner up and 7 time semi finalist

Germany is a giant in world football. England is a minow that likes to swim with the big fish but always get swallowed up. This current England team has been one of the least convincing sides to make it into the last 16 and their record so far speaks for itself. Didn't people say England were favourites to beat the USA & Algeria? Look what happened there."

Also at some articles which I browsed through whilst I was searching for a different article to post it on the other worldcup thread, it was mentioned that UK has some great players....however that this doesn't help much, when they aren't good in playing as a team (again, I don't know that myself, so don't know if that is true or not, as I am rather selective about which game to watch and which not...I used to support more a local club than the national team whilst I was living back home).
